In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

May 11, 2009 -

Violent video games, a frequent political target in Germany, once again came under fire following the horrific school shooting in Winnenden on March 11th.

While there were renewed calls for a complete ban on violent games, it was, surprisingly, paintball and laser tag which, ultimately, will find themselves outlawed.

The Local reports that violators of the upcoming bans could find themselves on the wrong end of a €5,000 (about US$6,800) fine. Wolfgang Bosbach, deputy head of the conservative Christian Union parliamentary group, commented:

We have agreed on reasonable changes that will mean more security without over-regulating hobby marksmen and hunters... [Paintball and laser tag] simulate killing.

The Winnenden case also sparked a debate on gun control in Germany. The BBC has more.

Best thing ev4r in this topic:

Paintball Videogames are rated Ages 12 and up because they are not violent enough to get a higher rating. :D

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

A prime example of useless banning. And a prime example of Germany saying "Fuck You" let's ban Laser Tag & Paintball cause it turns kids into sociopaths

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

I apologize! However, I don't exactly support your thinking and comments. The difficulty with violent gaming is that it does in fact attract people with challenging behaviors and or psychological damage. Banning these games will not reduce this, however by limiting access and or restricting through censorship will assist in these personality types having easy access. The stimulus and the self belief that this is normal part of life can often trigger these terrible catastrophes. I am not against gun's and knives, nor am I obviously against airsoft guns. These have been used for corporate relationship bonding, they are also used for a lot of fun by teens and young adults. Health minds can distinguish between right and wrong, social gaming and do not identify with violence. Airsoft Guns

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

This is absurb, they're going the wrong way about this. Germany is just making a mockery out of itself. The main problem (in my opinion) is bullying.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

I can't help but laugh at the aspect of police beatign down doors and confiscating foamr darts guns, lazer tag and paintball equipment. I doubt the police would even bother.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

Police are people too. Here in Quebec if they catch you with small amounts of weed (when you obviously aren't selling it) they often (a little luck is required) will just confiscate it and pretend they never saw you. In rare cases, I have heard of police officers ignoring the fact people were smoking up completely, depending on where they were doing it.

If you put stupid laws in place or make the punishment too steep, you only encourage the police to do nothing.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

Hey lets ban schools. You can't have school shootings without schools.

Germans need to make sure that their politicians don't get away with stuff like this. They are only placating the perceived public opinion to stay in office. The German electorate needs to demand serious action from their government and not this superficial bill that will do nothing to prevent another shooting.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

I think it's unfair that other people should suffer the reprocutions while guns are still legal.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

??

Wouldn't banning guns also force others to suffer the reprocutions of idiots going on shooting sprees?

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

Exactly.  Look at America; over 50 million firearms.  Why should we pay the price for criminals, many of whom don't even legally own theirs?

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

Germany starts 2 world wars but cant handle lazer tage and games. Ohh the irony

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

Because lazer tag guns kill people effectively....

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

I have actually had politicians tell me, that laser tag is the worst of the bunch because - and I quote verbatim - "you don't even see what you do to the other guy".

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

I know if you actually saw what you did to the other guy then you might actually see *gasp* the light on his chest turn off.

And we all know that if you don't get to see a light going off you won't know the consequences of shooting a real gun.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

If it is true that this is just a proposal right now and not actually law then this article needs to be changed. The article is stating that this is now law in Germany and laser tag and paintball is banned. Please correct the article.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

For now, it's only announced that there will be a law at some point, but no actual legislation has happened. There isn't even a bill yet, and I don't expect this to go forward before the elections in september.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

So...ban things that simulate killing, but not things that...actually kill?  Yeah, that makes total sense.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

My friend you are quick and to the point. That's exactly my reaction to all this BS Ger,many, US its all the same. I'm not against a gun ban for several reasons but its definately hypocricy to blast the fake guns and when the issue of real guns comes up they intentionally put blindfolds and earplugs on which IMO does make the game controversy about training killers etc null and void.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

How many school shootings have occurred in recent years in Germany? And how many potential school shooters will be affected by this law?

This law really overlooks the diminishing returns of making a country more safe.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

In fact, it's not so surprising.

You see, German anti-violence activists (parents, teachers, politicians...) are long-time opponents to "killerspiele", or "killer games"... except that initially, these termes did NOT target video games, but laser tag, laserdom, paintball, airsoft, etc... Video games were excluded from this definition until 1999 and the Columbine massacre. Only then, they became the "killer games" number 1, and the problem aggravated in 2002 with the Erfurt massacre. But paintball was still targeted. After all, the Emsdetten shooter (2006) was said to practice it.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

I was going through the BBC news website, and I notice this.

The German teenage gunman who killed 15 people on Wednesday shot one of his victims at a psychiatric clinic where he was to be treated for depression.

...

On Thursday, Stuttgart district prosecutor Siegfried Mahler revealed that the teenager was supposed to undergo treatment for depression there.

I don't know about you, but I think that may have at least a small effect that lead to the shooting.

The Stupid: It Burns

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

At first sight German conservatives (including the former "social democrats") still seem to believe that BANNING symptoms will remove the problem.

But all in all it's all about the election year and the fact that they are DESPERATE to find a scapegoat that will shift the attention from their TOTAL failure at social issues.

While this paintball ban will most CERTAINLY stay in place after the elections, the lobby will take care of any attempt that may lead to stricter gun controls.

Oh, and btw another rampage (this time with knives) happened a only few days ago - fortunately no casualties, except for a girl that was wounded. No word about banning cutlery (yet), but maybe they have to wait until the German police comes up anything resembling some sort of clue that idiot may have played any kind of "violent" games or listened to any sort of "violent" music.

ZAR.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

Banning symptoms? What exactly are paintball and laser tag a symptom of? I'm going to go with the need to have fun. I get where you're coming from though.

If this actually goes through it is complete insanity. I am half-German and I've thought about visiting Germany at some point, maybe even moving there. But fuck, if this is the kind of thing that goes on there, I think I'll be quite happy to stay in Canada.

Banning laser tag...it shoots LIGHT Germany! LIGHT.

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

Because this is a smart response.  Let's ban some games.  Hell, let's ban checkers next!

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, Laser Tag

Followed shortly thereafter by the banning of D&D.  It teaches kids the magicks and how to use a bow and arrow!

Re: In Wake of School Rampage, Germany Bans Paintball, ...

No that's Runescape, D&D makes kids join cults and worship satan (sadly people were actually claiming that about D&D.

Besides, it's the Germans. They WERE the Nazis 70 years ago.

Something does need to be done about politics in Germany though, it seems as if fear-mongering and fiery rhetoric will get you far. At least when it comes to video games.

Honestly, it seems to work on about 60% of Canada's population too. Many votes have been driven away from a certain party here by people claiming they had a "hidden agenda" and were planning to buy an aircraft carrier, among other things.

All you have to do is claim someone is going to do some dumb shit and make sure it gets repeated enough times, and people will believe it even if there is no proof. Gossip is a terrible weapon.
