Defendant Links Kiddie Porn Collection to Use of Video Games, Comic Books & PC

Michael Cherry, a 38-year-old Ontario man in court to plead guilty to possessing child pornography, offered a unique explanation for his crime.

The London Free Press reports:

Admitting he possessed child pornography, a London man said yesterday he lived "in a closed box" of friendless fantasy fuelled by video games, his computer and comic books.

"I’d work, come home . . . lock myself in my apartment…"

After a difficult childhood in foster care, separated from his siblings, his client became a truck driver who lived by himself in squalor and clinical depression, Squire said. "He was in a black hole . . . a strange sort of world his computer created."

Yeah.  We all know that the Farting in somebody’s General Direction is King Arthur’s fault.

Freedom of speech means the freedom to say ANYTHING, so long as it is the truth. This does not exclude anything that might hurt someone’s feelings.

    Let’s see

    Posting Gay porn

    Farting in someones General direction

    I think that’s it

Watching JT on GP is just like watching an episode of Jerry springer only as funny as the fights

I came away with the impression that he was trying to make the excuse that his depression, and not his activities, was what caused it.

However, it still does not excuse him.

It’s not comics, it’s Manga!  You just can’t appreciate the difference!

    *Douchebag mode off.*

True, an over-generalization on my part, was kind of annoyed at the time, if someone has a problem like paedophilia, I can, to a certain degree, feel an aspect of sympathy for them with the way society treats them, but feel they definately need to get help, I cannot support what they desire.

However, when someone tries to blame that problem on external influences as though you can catch it from looking at too much GTA or the like, that just gets my goat, it’s Thompsonism at it’s greatest.

Anyway, as I said, you are correct, he is not a molestor, but he should still be seeking help rather than allocating blame 😉

It’s not just the porn, it’s CHILD porn.  You know, as in the actors are children.  Which is illegal almost everywhere.  If he was watching Debbie Does Dallas, nobody would have a problem.  He was watching Debby’s 12th Birthday Shower, which may not make him a predator per se, but does bring up an issue of psychosis that needs to be dealt with.

Freedom of speech means the freedom to say ANYTHING, so long as it is the truth. This does not exclude anything that might hurt someone’s feelings.

Fun fact: in the UK, it’s illegal to know how to recover data from a broken hard drive.

The thinking is, that "…but as soon as I found out what it was, I deleted it" is an excuse that will fly in court if you’re accused of downloading child porn. Unless, of course, you know how to un-delete it.

And being a techie makes you a criminal because you copy data!!(and yet corporate are the ones selling us the devices to copy with to start with)
And liking 2D porn/hentai makes you a disgusting predator!!!(and soem prefer the 2D over the real thing because people suck and are not worth putting up with…)

I’ve heard inmates especially hate pedophiles, but I don’t think he touched any kids.  He just had kiddie porn.

Meh, the inmates might not see much of a difference.

  12. beemoh says:

Because "Unless, of course, you know how to un-delete it.".

You don’t have to have been seen to recover said data, just need to have the means to do so.

  13. Bennett Beeny says:

"Fun fact: in the UK, it’s illegal to know how to recover data from a broken hard drive."

Rubbish!  How would anyone ever be prosecuted for it.  The crime has to be in putting the knowledge to use in some way.

  14. Bennett Beeny says:

Hey, sealing oneself away from humanity does not make a person seek out child pornography.  Being a sick fuck does that.  Why does everyone always blame the introverted personality for this crap.  Leave us introverts out of it.

  15. Haggard says:

I agree, there’s plenty that people can do to improve their lives and being addicted to your computer is just a rejection of trying to do anything about it.

But I hasten to point out he didn’t actually molest any children.

  16. GoodRobotUs says:

His computer didn’t create the hole, he did, the computer didn’t force him to become a recluse, he chose to, the computer didn’t force him to download child porn, he chose to.

Like any tool, a computer contains the potential for abuse, a screwdriver can become a murder weapon, but that is not the fault of the screwdriver, it is the fault of the person using it, there’s even been a case of someone killed with a paintbrush, need to track that one down.

Sorry to hear he had various syndromes as a child, I only had one, it’s called ‘locking up child molesting bastards syndrome’, but I’ve never been able to shake it…

  17. Zero Beat says:

Kakashi Hatake would be in deep trouble with lawsuits, if it weren’t for his deadliness.

    Immediate Press Release!

A new organization, People Against Sand, hereby announces the immediate demand for legislation against sand.

People stick their heads in it, you see.

It’s the sand’s fault.  Not their issues they don’t want to face.

    Just the sand’s fault.

So, with that being said, we hereby bring a multi-billion dollar lawsuit against sand.  It’s the corrupting factor that makes everyone ignore… well… everything.

    So it’s sand’s fault.

And banning it will make all those problems they are sticking their heads in it for go away.

    ‘Nuff said.

Seems like he’d get more sympathy and a lessened case if they could prove that his troubled childhood and his depersonalizing work as a truck-driver was the source of his provlems. Hell, if they could try some sort of insanity plea, it might work more than blaming the games, the computer, and the various things he chose to buy and use to seal himself away from humanity.

  21. DavCube says:

After a difficult childhood in foster care, separated from his siblings, his client became a truck driver who lived by himself in squalor and clinical depression, Squire said. "He was in a black hole . . . a strange sort of world his computer created."

Sooooooo it was the fault of the computer AFTER his childhood that his childhood sucked? What magical time-space altering computer was he using?

  22. Void Munashii says:

I’m surprised he didn’t blame Dungeons & Dragons and heavy metal music too, then he could have covered almost all of the old media bugaboos.

As others have said, his computer did not create the problem, it just made it easier for him to create the problem. If the computer’s responsible then it’s that bottle of Jack Daniels that is responsible for my headache, not me.
