A new study indicates that children who spend too much time watching TV or playing video games may be at increased risk for high blood pressure.
HealthDay News reports:
American and Spanish researchers examined the association between sedentary behavior and blood pressure in 111 boys and girls, 3 to 8 years old. For seven days, the children wore a special device that recorded their activity levels. In addition, their parents reported how much time the youngsters spent watching TV, playing video games, painting, sitting or doing other low-level activities.
The researchers also measured the children's height, weight, fat mass and blood pressure...
"The results of this study showed that TV viewing and screen time were associated with elevated blood pressure independent of body composition in children," the researchers wrote.
The study is published in the current issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.

I smell bullshit on this. I lived with my grandma at Tennesse for nearly 5 years and all that stress allowed me to have high blood pressure. My tv watching and video game playing rate has not gone up nor gone down. Now I live here in Texas and the last time I checked my blood pressure it drastaclly went down. So I say this before they blame games and TV think about what the person does for a living before saying its "offical" because 10 out of 10 does not make it right.
In other news, the sky is blue and the sun is bright.
Honestly, what good does a study such as this do? It states little more than the obvious - that being low physical activity contributes to high blood pressure - and at worst gives idiot alarmists petty fuel to burn on.
Not that said alarmist fuel will be considered even remotely useful by anyone else, of course.
That's what I thought. It's pretty obvious that children who spend more time sitting around and less time getting exercise will be more inclined toward things like high blood pressure.
They went off the parents' word to measure the amount of time they spent playing videogames? Why not just use the "because I'm a scientist and I say so" method.
THIS JUST IN PEOPLE WHO AVOID DOING HEALTHY THINGS TEND NOT TO BE HEALTHY 11O'CLOCK NEWS SPECIAL.
LEARN HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF.
Shrug. I can get high blood pressure just by driving on Interstate 5, now thats high blood pressure. Never know when some idiot is gonna blast by you doing 100.
That's a scary thought....
*sighs* They're desperate to link video games to anything these days.
They're desperate to link anything to anything bad these days. It's called "the blame game" and it's promiscuous mother is big and fat and goes by the name of "irresponsibility".
They used a pool of 111 kids for the study? No statician in their right mind would approve of that. You need a much larger pool of clients for any other medical research study. Prescription testing requires thousands of patients. Furthermore, which kids make up the control group? What about their diets? Which kids ate McD's all the time, and which ones didn't? There's enough wrong with this study that I'm simply not convinced.
Come on now, I know how much people here hate to have anything negative associated with their favourite hobby, but you can't really disagree with this. An unhealthy lifestyle leads to an unhealthy body, it's pretty simple.
Here's a simple resolution: Get a freakin Nintendo Wii and a Wii Sport.
That will kinda solve the high blood pressure problem.
