Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in Online Games

August 19, 2009

Vietnamese legislators openly criticized a government minister for failing to act to regulate online games, reports the Thanh Nien News.

Minister of Information and Communications Le Doan Hop (left) addressed the National Assembly last week to discuss plans to manage online gaming. However, representative Nguyen Ngoc Dao claimed that online games caused "moral and mental erosion" and argued that Hop's strategy was insufficient.

Hop told legislators that online games could not be banned and began to speak of their advantages and disadvantages. Those comments were cut short by another representative, Nguyen Van Thuan, who wanted to hear more about enforcement of regulations directed at online games:

The representatives were not asking about the pros and cons of online games but they wanted to know if the ministry was responsible for the current situation.

Management is supposed to include the issuing of regulations and the enforcement of them but the minister hasn’t talked about enforcement.

"Nevermind whether we should or should not ban them.  The question is, are we banning them hard enough?"

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

Oh yes real world corruption and moral decay in the higher classes so lets make it the world look better by preventing the lower classes to have fun.

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy! Stop supporting big media and furthering the criminalization of consumers!! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/

Stupidity has made us laugh since forever

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

In an online game you can say whatever yo uwant with little repercussion, because you can't get punched i nthe face, and os long as it's i nthe rules, so onlien gaming doesn't cause moral and mental decay, just the usual rules of etiquette doen't exavctly apply.

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

So really they're nothing morean enablers. Stop blaming the game and start blaming the people!

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

Nguyen Ngoc Dao? I think Nguyen would be the surname, so shouldn't it be Ngoc Dao Nguyen? I believe the article from Thanh Nien News mixed around the surname is because in many asian cultures, the surname comes first, and Thanh Nien News kept the surname first due to it's readers. Kind of like how in anime websites, some of them keep the surname first. Sometimes you see Haruhi Suzumiya, while other times, you see Suzumiya Haruhi.

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

Haruhi Suzumiya - great anime!

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

"moral and mental erosion"

Clearly Nguyen Ngoc Dao is a man of considerable wisdom.

Re: Vietnamese Legislator: "Moral and Mental Erosion" in ...

I just learned today that a child was suspended for taking insulin at school.  Said child was also called a drug addict....how long before I'm also labeled as such for playing video games?

JDKJ: And I'm wondering what the "I graduated high school 4 years ago" part has to do with anything. Did your high school diploma have an expiration date stamped on it which has now passed? Like a gallon of milk that's been in the fridge too long?

JDKJ: . . . and the health services industry is not only one of the few industries currently hiring, but they're also paying real good money. Not bad at all for a low-cost, two-year investment. But, again, the choice is yours.

JDKJ: And if there's a local community college nearby you, I'll bet that tuition's dirt cheap. Even if you have to take out loans, it can't be all that bad. And many community colleges offer two-year degrees in health services-related fields . . .

JDKJ: @taco: That's your choice. And not to say it's a bad choice, but there is the downside of you not being very employable without a college education. Not to say that a college degree guarantees you'll get a job. But it can help and usually never hurts.

magic_taco: I graduated HS 4 years ago,And i'd rather not borrow money and end up paying it back in the future.

JDKJ: @taco: The job thing I can understand. It's tough times out there. But why can't you still do the college thing? Grants and loans and work/study. That's how most folks do it.

magic_taco: Im just bothered i cant find a job or be able to enroll into a college no thanks to a tanking economy.
