Time to Move On

September 14, 2009 -

Hey, I've got something to share with you:

Today is my last day as editor of GamePolitics.

Although the public announcement may seem sudden, the decision to move on is one that I've been considering for some time. While I'm enormously proud of GamePolitics, after four-plus years of continuous coverage of a tightly-focused news genre, my heart tells me that I've said all that I can say about the intersection of video games and politics.

I let ECA president Hal Halpin know of my decision last month and I'm grateful that Hal - as always - has been supportive. My departure also means, of course, that GP will have a new editor. We'll have that announcement in a separate post today. As for me, I've made the decision to step away from journalism and will be moving into another opportunity.

While there will be days on which I miss the daily challenge of editing GamePolitics, I am quite certain that I will miss the community of GP readers even more. Some of you have been around since the earliest days of the site. It has always been your passion about video games and your interest in the politics surrounding the medium that energized GamePolitics and made it one of the most unique destinations on the web.

Play on.

Re: Time to Move On

Whoa!  I was finally getting up on all the stories I missed while I was on travel last week and this was not something I was expecting to see.

Good luck in what you're doing next Dennis.  I've been coming to the site for nearly as long as it's been around and I can definitely say that you'll be missed.

Also, let me know if you start a new Twitter account, us guys with eerily similar avatars gotta stick together.

Re: Time to Move On

Sorry for not being around often enough to wish you a farewell Dennis. You will be missed, and I hope GP survives...

You take care and have fun in your future endeavors. :( I don't know what else to say now, it's been so many years that I never considered the fact you may leave...

Farewell Dennis.

Re: Time to Move On

Sorry for being so late, but I wanted to tell Dennis how much I will miss him, and how much I thank him for the creation of GamePolitics, which is not only my #1 information source, but also one of the best gaming websites I've ever known. I wish you best, although I'm sad to see you gone.

Re: Time to Move On

Wait, you mean I step away for a few weeks and come back to this?!

Dennis, you've been absolutely fantastic as editor of GP, and I'm still having trouble of thinking of this site being you, with a few other people contributing.  Thank you so much for one of the sites that has been one of my routine visits, and best of luck in your new venture!

Re: Time to Move On

Thank you for creating a foundation where video game legislation can be discussed on common ground. Hats off to you Mr. McCauley.

Re: Time to Move On

Wow, I haven't been reading the site for very long but I'm definitely sad to see you go. I've learned a lot from the site and it was great to find a place that reported on the many issues you did.

Not to mention the fact that it's a great place to waste time when you should be working.

All the best, Dennis. The site won't be the same without you.

Re: Time to Move On

So long Dennis. It's been a pleasure. Good luck.

Re: Time to Move On

Sorry to see you go, but I wish you all the best. Thanks for all the fish etc. ;)

I hope you have as much, if not more, fun in your new job.

Gift.

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck Dennis, though I never really liked how you tend to portray games like rapelay while defending other games like GTA and Manhunt, but I guess anyone can have their opinions like that.

Other than that, I felt that you have been well balanced between not getting your own opinions mixed with the news and that is how a real journalist should be. Also trying to cover both sides of the argument and not favoring either end.

Good luck Dennis and well done in your time running Game politics.

Re: Time to Move On

I've been a reader for about three years, and it's sad to see you go, but good luck for the future and I hope all goes well with what you decide to do in life.

Re: Time to Move On

Good luck Dennis with whatever you decide to do, the site's been great, here's to the new owner being good at the site as well.

O_O As a reader since nearly the beginning this is certainly a surprise. Goodluck with whatever it is you're moving on to.

I was planning what to say all day, but the best I can say is: good luck, Dennis. Thank you for all you hard work. I really hope that any ex-lawyer from Miami keep annoying you.

Well damn, just read this now. Sorry to hear you go, but I understand. Its better to move on while its something you still enjoy to an extent, then for it to become a hassle. Good bye, And good luck with whatever you end up doing. I'll be sure to watch out for your name

Although I haven't been around as long as others, it is still sad for me to see you go.  I wish you luck on your new path Dennis.

Happy trails Dennis. It's a bit of a sad announcement, but at least we can look forward to a certain loudmouth proclaiming how he got you kicked off the terrestrial internets.

Re: Time to Move On

Hard to believe it's been 4 years.  Kudos for what you built, Dennis--sites don't become web successes by happenstance.  They are the result of tireless effort and work, which is evidenced by the constant stream of updates you provided us over the years--that above everything else made this THE destination for gaming-related political and legal news.  Take a break--you've earned it--and good luck with whatever endeavor you pursue next.  If you pour even half of the effort you put into GP, it will surely be a success!

Re: Time to Move On

Sad to see you go Dennis.

This site was a great site, and even though i didn't comment often i enjoyed this site and your professional journalism.

Good luck in future endeavours.

Re: Time to Move On

You'll still receive emails from Jack Thompson most likely.

Sad to see you go.  Very :( moment.

Re: Time to Move On

Sad to see you go Dennis, I've only been reading GP for about a year but it's the one blog that I've made sure to read every single day. I've had a lot of fun through all the wacky stuff that's happened here, but I know it will continue.

You may be the editor, but I think we can all agree that it is the community of commenters that really make this place special. I hope your replacement can fill your shoes well enough :)

Re: Time to Move On

In my official capacity as a reader/lurker since the very early LJ days...

NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

But seriously though, it's been fantastic, good luck to you in whatever it is you're ditching us losers for, and good luck to GP's new editor, who will have a hell of an act to follow up on.

Re: Time to Move On

I got to be the person to use the computer for the demonstration in my SGD 116 class and we were making a webpage. My computer was being displayed on the overhead projector. I made a link to GP as a secret page. When I clicked the link. I had pressed back as I realised what the top news was and went back. I almost yelled 'WTF?!' or make a statement about how its a few months late for an April Fools Day joke.

On that note, I hope you do well in whatever project you start doing next. Don't be a stranger. IMHO, Gamepolitics isn't Gamepolitics without ya.

Whoever the new editor is had better unplug his fax machine for the next few days, because JT's going to have a field day.

Re: Time to Move On

Wow, good luck to you, Dennis!

Thanks for making GP one of those rare places on the web where I could read and discuss matters of importance (to me, at least) with like-minded adult (and mature young-adult) gamers.  You will be missed!

Re: Time to Move On

Peace and Long life Dennis.

Besides its not like you will not pop in now and again to share some of your enlightment with us right?  I mean is it even possible to go cold turkey from GP?

Re: Time to Move On

Farewell, Dennis.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Re: Time to Move On

Dennis,

I am very sad to see you go, but understand you need to do what is best for you professionally and for your family.

You have built GamePolitics into an influential source of news that is relied on by those who represent and cover the industry. (It has not gone unnoticed how many other game sites "repurpose" your work, both with and without attribution.) In the process, you have done a great service for the community, both by creating a greater appreciation among gamers for the importance of civic engagement and by debunking many of the myths about gamers held by politicians and other opinion makers.

I always hoped you would write a book about the "great video game wars" of this decade. I suppose that will be left to another, but when it is written it should have a chapter dedicated to the importance of GamePolitics in the public policy debate.

Thank you for creating this site and providing such an engaging forum. Best wishes for continued success as you move on to the next phase of your career.

Re: Time to Move On

Dennis,

I started reading GP back when it was an LJ community.  Back in the era of Squirrel of Wrath and his owl posts, Ogg Thompson's "Fire bad" replies to JT posts, and when JT threatened to sue us all for emailing him because he forgot to turn off LJ's comment notification.

Good times.

You'll be missed.  Good luck,

 -Paul

I've been following GP since the end of high school, and became a member a little more than a year ago, and I've loved the stories and articles posted and published on this site. Thank you, Mr. McCauley, for all the memories, and Godspeed. Don't be a stranger, 'kay? :*)

P.S. Loved the JT articles. Though I'm sure he's spamming your inbox every day, I hope that he'll lay off or pull back some of the crazy a bit. If he's still an item of bother after all this, I'll pray that bugs eat his eyeballs from the inside out.

Dennis, thanks for all the work you've put into the site and delivering onto us some great posts about politics and video games. I wish you all the best in your future activities.

Thank you.

Re: Time to Move On

Thanks for everything. Your dedication to this site has been truly remarkable.

And seriously, you should really consider writing a book about some of your experiences here. Even just the stuff we do know about is incredible, and I can only imagine that is only the tip of the crazy iceberg. You must have mindboggling stories of what went on behind the scenes.
