Time to Move On

Hey, I’ve got something to share with you:

Today is my last day as editor of GamePolitics.

Although the public announcement may seem sudden, the decision to move on is one that I’ve been considering for some time. While I’m enormously proud of GamePolitics, after four-plus years of continuous coverage of a tightly-focused news genre, my heart tells me that I’ve said all that I can say about the intersection of video games and politics.

I let ECA president Hal Halpin know of my decision last month and I’m grateful that Hal – as always – has been supportive. My departure also means, of course, that GP will have a new editor. We’ll have that announcement in a separate post today. As for me, I’ve made the decision to step away from journalism and will be moving into another opportunity.

While there will be days on which I miss the daily challenge of editing GamePolitics, I am quite certain that I will miss the community of GP readers even more. Some of you have been around since the earliest days of the site. It has always been your passion about video games and your interest in the politics surrounding the medium that energized GamePolitics and made it one of the most unique destinations on the web.

Play on.

Dennis, I am proud to say I’ve been a reader of your work for the last couple of years. It is a surprise that you are leaving and one I am sad over. However what ever you do in life from here on out, good luck πŸ™‚ Despite any arguement any of us have had with you, there is one universal thing we will admit: We all respected you.

Take care, and hope to see your comments in the upcoming stories from the new editor. Oh and enjoy the peace from a lightened load of Jack Thompson spam-mails πŸ˜›

  2. Elegant says:

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your editoring of the site.  I’ll miss your comments and work.

I’ve been reading the site for under a year now and you’ve certainly done a fantastic job. I love reading GP and hope to continue doing so in the future. Thank you for establishing this great source of news. πŸ™‚

Dennis, It’s been nice of you to be our GP editor.  I guess it’s really the time for you to move on.  thanks for making us gamers happy by keeping track of what’s going on in gaming controversey, politics, and keeping track of politicians pulling double standards.

I wish you good luck, Dennis

Best of luck in whatever you’re moving onto Dennis. It’s been an absolute joy watching GP grow with you – you’ve done a fantastic job over the years and we can’t thank you enough.

    Cheers mate!

I’ve learnt so much reading GamePolitics and it’s really opened my eyes to the things that are happening to the industry, and I’m only 14! I hope that you drop by and make a few guest posts from time to time.

Good luck and I hope you keep the gaming dream alive.

  10. Zerodash says:

    Good luck, Dennis!

Seriously, though- you do realize that Jack Thompson is going to try and take credit for you leaving GP. He will likely spin this as your departure is a result of an impending lawsuit and leaving is an "admission of guilt" as he is wont to do. Not that what he says matters anymore.

  11. KayleL says:

    Cure you Jack Thompson!!!!

All jokes aside, we will miss you Dennis. If you are heading into politics, please let use know so we can vote for you.

Well, that’s bit of a bummer for the GP readers, I think, but as someone who also recently changed course, I can certainly understand.

Good luck Dennis! Don’t be a stranger…you know, you can still write here, even if in comments πŸ™‚

It’s sad to see you go after so many great years GP, but there comes a time when we have to chose the path we want to follow.

Best of luck to you, and be sure to stop by now and then to say hi. The place just wouldn’t be the same without you.

Good luck in what you’re doing next Dennis.  I’ve been coming to the site for nearly as long as it’s been around and I can definitely say that you’ll be missed.

Also, let me know if you start a new Twitter account, us guys with eerily similar avatars gotta stick together.

  16. JC says:

Sorry for not being around often enough to wish you a farewell Dennis. You will be missed, and I hope GP survives…

You take care and have fun in your future endeavors. πŸ™ I don’t know what else to say now, it’s been so many years that I never considered the fact you may leave…

    Farewell Dennis.

  17. Soldat_Louis says:

Sorry for being so late, but I wanted to tell Dennis how much I will miss him, and how much I thank him for the creation of GamePolitics, which is not only my #1 information source, but also one of the best gaming websites I’ve ever known. I wish you best, although I’m sad to see you gone.

  18. LoopyChew says:

Wait, you mean I step away for a few weeks and come back to this?!

Dennis, you’ve been absolutely fantastic as editor of GP, and I’m still having trouble of thinking of this site being you, with a few other people contributing.  Thank you so much for one of the sites that has been one of my routine visits, and best of luck in your new venture!

Wow, I haven’t been reading the site for very long but I’m definitely sad to see you go. I’ve learned a lot from the site and it was great to find a place that reported on the many issues you did.

Not to mention the fact that it’s a great place to waste time when you should be working.

All the best, Dennis. The site won’t be the same without you.

Good luck Dennis, though I never really liked how you tend to portray games like rapelay while defending other games like GTA and Manhunt, but I guess anyone can have their opinions like that.

Other than that, I felt that you have been well balanced between not getting your own opinions mixed with the news and that is how a real journalist should be. Also trying to cover both sides of the argument and not favoring either end.

Good luck Dennis and well done in your time running Game politics.

I’ve been a reader for about three years, and it’s sad to see you go, but good luck for the future and I hope all goes well with what you decide to do in life.

Hard to believe it’s been 4 years.  Kudos for what you built, Dennis–sites don’t become web successes by happenstance.  They are the result of tireless effort and work, which is evidenced by the constant stream of updates you provided us over the years–that above everything else made this THE destination for gaming-related political and legal news.  Take a break–you’ve earned it–and good luck with whatever endeavor you pursue next.  If you pour even half of the effort you put into GP, it will surely be a success!

  36. SS says:

Sad to see you go Dennis, I’ve only been reading GP for about a year but it’s the one blog that I’ve made sure to read every single day. I’ve had a lot of fun through all the wacky stuff that’s happened here, but I know it will continue.

You may be the editor, but I think we can all agree that it is the community of commenters that really make this place special. I hope your replacement can fill your shoes well enough πŸ™‚

I got to be the person to use the computer for the demonstration in my SGD 116 class and we were making a webpage. My computer was being displayed on the overhead projector. I made a link to GP as a secret page. When I clicked the link. I had pressed back as I realised what the top news was and went back. I almost yelled ‘WTF?!’ or make a statement about how its a few months late for an April Fools Day joke.

On that note, I hope you do well in whatever project you start doing next. Don’t be a stranger. IMHO, Gamepolitics isn’t Gamepolitics without ya.

I am very sad to see you go, but understand you need to do what is best for you professionally and for your family.

You have built GamePolitics into an influential source of news that is relied on by those who represent and cover the industry. (It has not gone unnoticed how many other game sites "repurpose" your work, both with and without attribution.) In the process, you have done a great service for the community, both by creating a greater appreciation among gamers for the importance of civic engagement and by debunking many of the myths about gamers held by politicians and other opinion makers.

I always hoped you would write a book about the "great video game wars" of this decade. I suppose that will be left to another, but when it is written it should have a chapter dedicated to the importance of GamePolitics in the public policy debate.

Thank you for creating this site and providing such an engaging forum. Best wishes for continued success as you move on to the next phase of your career.

  64. black manta says:

I’m sad to see you go, Dennis.  I’m sure whoever replaces you will be just as competent, but it won’t be you.  GP under your guidance provided some of the best political coverage when it came to gaming.  And of course for better or worse was our go-to source for keeping track of all of Jack Thompson’s antics.  In fact, I would like to think this site had a big hand in contributing to his downfall, as no other news site was able to document such a consistent pattern of behavior that could be tracked which ultimately culminated in the authorities giving him his long-overdue disbarment.  And it was probably also for this reason that you were so frequently the target of his ire, as he realized you were a threat to his credibility.

Unlike others, I doubt Jack will take credit for your leaving.  You weren’t being pressured in any way by any outside forces he could even tangentially link himself with, and GP will remain after you’ve gone.  If anything, he’s probably furious as he will now be deprived of one of his favorite punching bags.  Though he’ll probably move on to a new one soon enough, knowing him (I feel sorry for Hal, BTW.  This means his inbox is going to be spammed twice as much now!)

As with all the others, I wish you best of luck, Dennis.  Here’s hoping I’ll see you at the next VGXpo!
