Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

October 6, 2009 -

A BusinessWeek list of the Top 40 companies in the world is topped by none other than Japanese videogame maker Nintendo.

The list, commissioned by BusinessWeek from consulting firm A.T. Kearney, started out with the 2,500 largest publicly listed companies in the world, then took only those with a minimum of $10 billion in sales. Further extrapolation thinned the herd to companies with at least 25% of their earnings coming from outside their home region. Finally, companies were rated on sales growth and value creation over the past five years.

Nintendo’s sales have risen 36% annually over the past five years according to BW, which added:

Despite the hard times of the past year, Nintendo's continued emphasis on innovation has helped the company develop must-haves such as the DS handheld game machine and the Wii console, which outsold rival offerings from Sony and Microsoft .

Google took second place, followed by Apple in third.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Thank God for Nintendo. They are the only company that seems to get that not all games are 12-40 year old men who love first person shooters. The motion controler is not why I bought a Wii, it's the games. There are great games that you can play in short 20 - 30 minute burts of fun. A lot more variety than the games you'll find on the 360 and PS3.

I know, a true gamer would laugh at any gaming session that less than hour.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

ya but the games are msotly made for 6-12 year old kids.... and non gamers who might as well be in the 6-12 demographic...

Well they can make games on the cheap for the drooling masses DS, thats why gaming and film...music..news...media in general... for that matter sucks so much these days

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

I know from my own experience that I had in my own opinion that Nintendo was the best company when it came to Videogames.

Ever since playing Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3 on the NES at my cousin's place. I also had a bit of a memory of playing Nintendo's Game and Watch: Octopus, also at my cousin's place.

Ever since I played those Nintendo games, I wanted to be as much into Nintendo and anything else with Videogames as I could.

Since my family could not get me a Nintendo because my family was middle class and did not have much money for me, all they could get me was Atari (because the 2600 was cheep since the market crash that happened a year before I was born).

Pitfall for the 2600 was the closest thing I ever got to Nintendo at the time, but nobody could ever be as close to Nintendo than Nintendo themselves.

All that time after playing Pitfall, I only ever got to play Nintendo games at my cousin's house, my friends houses and also my neighbour's house where almost everyone had a Nintendo console (NES or SNES) except for me.

It was not until I was 13 where I had saved up enough money to get a Nintendo 64. By that time many people would have written off Nintendo because they were failing badly in the industry losing out to Sony and Microsoft who had came in just when SEGA had pulled out of the hardware market after their Dreamcast failed to fire.

Many people during the days of the Gamecube were saying that nintendo were the next ones to fall out of the hardware market, and in many ways they did. But it was by falling out of the hardware competition and NOT the entire hardware market was what really saved Nintendo and also gave birth to what we now know as the Wii.

For a normal company, they would have failed. But Nintendo is NOT a normal company.

Unlike Atari and SEGA who had risen to the top and then fell dramaticly, Nintendo has been there, done that and got themselves back up again to the top.

Now THAT is what you call the world's best company.

And for people like me, all I need to say is Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. Wii and Brainage are the newer ones that capture the newer market but I am an old 24 year old man who has seen Nintendo from the eyes of a kid to a mature young man that I am now and I have always loved Nintendo.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Everything goes of trends, but it had to get trendy by doing something right.

Nintendo did something innovative with this system, both in its controller that both sony and microsoft have been trying to rip and in deciding not to go with the most expensive technology available.  Yeah it put them behind in graphics and computing power but they still made money when selling a system.  Not to mention how they expanded their market a ton into areas video games were never seen until now.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

MS did soemthing inovative with thier system with live (like it not), the WII is nice and all but my god the tech used for motion control is just bad and not geared for gamers who like subtle control....

It dose not have to be revolutionary just fun enough to warrent 30$ or more which 80% of the time they do not.

The wii mote is not revolutionary its more commen sence but lacking commen sense in its build....

I've already purchased most of the good games when they were made, why would I want to pay for them again?

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Why is it sad? sure the wii may not be the "hardcore" (as far as i'm concerned your halo junkies that write off the wii as kiddie toys are as hardcore as my little toe) but Nintendo has the highest consistency of Highly rated software in the business. It isn't a trend, Nintendo has been a dominating factor in this industry for years, only let down by shitty third party software by hacks looking to make a quick buck.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

*sigh*

1.  I was commenting on third party shovelware and the fact that people will buy the crap for their Wii because, much like the I Phone, it's the newest trend/gimmick.

2.  I was in no way putting this as a comment towards any of the three consoles, don't put words in my mouth.  It's rude and you don't need to search for something that isn't there to be pissed off about.  I'll say something sooner or later that'll do the job.

3.  I don't like games that don't have good stories (especially shooters), that being said, I'm more likely to purchase a Mario game than anything else.

4.  I don't own nor have I played Halo, nor do I have any plans on purchasing said product in the near future.

5.  Yes the software is greatly rated, but it is still underpowered next to the other consoles, and the exclusives when compared the other consoles are still in the majority of being crap.

6.  Don't take it personally, I was just stating my case in full.

7.  The Wii is the gimmick/fad/casual/ect. system.  It's true.  Just like the Xbox is more likely to fail on you then the other systems and the fact that the PS3 is loosing it's best exclusives.

I think you're reading my comment with more anger/annoyance than intended. Sorry if i gave you that impression.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

6.  Don't take it personally, I was just stating my case in full.

Now angry or annoyed, just a bit sad that I have to go into detail on something once again.  But in the end it really doesn't matter.  The only thing that really annoyed me is that you compared me to a Halo Junkie, I'm a Nis b***** and proud of it.  They can remake their games more than a monster collecting series and I'll still buy it.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

I wasn't comparing you to halo, i was just stating that's the kind of people I often see putting it down, calling themselves hardcore, when they don't really know what that is.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Congratulations Nintendo!  Now PLEASE don't blow it with pride and arrogance, cause that's been hurting Microsoft, and Sony especially.  It's way too easy to fall like that after ascending to the greatest height.  Didn't that help lead to N64's lukewarm establishment?

You've done a lot of things right, especially with motion control.  Super Mario Galaxy got it right: a flick of the wrist and you attack.  Metroid Prime 3 got it right: point at what you want to shoot and pull the trigger.  I think that's all the motion control the world needs.  It's supposed to be like an extra set of buttons rather than an entire replacement control system like Microsoft thinks it's supposed to be.

Your next direction should be researching and incorporating online play, cause your current system is awful.  Everyone despises your cumbersome Friend Codes--I know, I know, you want to protect the kids from swear words and other cyber horrors, but that's not the way to do it.  Heck, Friend Codes cost you Final Fantasy 11 and you know it.  And Smash Bros. is no fun online due to persistent lag issues that plague all but stripped-down tournament style matches.  Fix it in your next revision.

Still, I must admit that your seemingly backwards strategy of ignoring online play has resulted in local multiplayer being kept alive, whereas Microsoft and Sony would rather have each player buy their own game copies every single time.  So good job there, but it's time to take the next step, and don't forget about who put you in the number 1 position: The Gamers.  New and old, noob and elite, they giveth to thee and they taketh away, amen.

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Some of that there is a bit overreaction. Final Fantasy XI probably wouldn't have ever come to the Wii due to

a) Company loyalty that continues today (Nintendo only gets Crystal Chronicles, spinoffs, and remakes in FF)

b) The game was pretty old when it came out, let alone now.

c) The lag seems to be different from game to game. Mario Kart Wii works fine along with other games. Brawl seems to be an exception.

That said, Nintendo could still do better. Their download services are things that they put next-to-no effort into.

-Little N64 attention
-No plans for a sure-to-make-money Virtual Handheld for DSi
-Unwilling to do ANY work for import titles, even for games that already have translations

Re: Wii-Maker Named World’s Best Company

Not quite.  Square Enix actually considered bringing FF11 to Wii once, but admittedly the idea never got onto the runway due to a handful of factors, not just one.  No hard drive, resolution issues, Nintendo not allowing the development of cross-platform titles (wha?), etc.

Not so much a focus on innovation(the wii mote is cute but still under developed...) but a focus on non gamers and kid gamers...IMO...

Kids like frat boys are to dumb to care and non gamers wouldn't know just how off things are....

Or focused on profits. The quality of a company is measured in cash.

Flattering, but it was really just based on how much money Nintendo is making.
