Kotaku editor Mike Fahey has written a wonderfully detailed and candid first-person account of his addiction to EverQuest.
Fahey begins his story in late 2000, noting that he had a job, a car and a girlfriend. Shortly after, following the breakup of his relationship, he was enticed to join the online world of EverQuest at the behest of his roommate. Falling completely for the game he soon found himself unemployed, his car towed and his wallet empty. While he rebounded for a time, he apparently committed the long rumored, rarely admitted geek-sin of turning down relations for a chance to hit level 40 with his character.
Mike again rebounded, turning his addiction into a job, which helped, as he states, “I've managed to turn a habit that once interrupted my work into something I actively have to do for work. It's no longer escapism if I am doing my job.”
Fahey also admitted that the fault was mostly, if not all, his own:
I hid. I ran from my problems, hiding away in a virtual fantasy world instead of confronting the issues that might have been easily resolved if I had addressed them directly. As far as I am concerned, the only thing Sony Online Entertainment is guilty of is creating a damn good hiding place.
Thanks Andrew

Oh, so it's as simple as finding way to get paid for doing it is it?
And here I was thinking the key to beating it was paying someone to let you clean their house for them and bake cookies.

I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.
Did you bother to read the original article, or did you base your brain dead post on just the summary.
What do you think?
I give about as much a shit for game addicts as I do for alcoholics or junkies.

You sure sound like a total asshole.
The article is an excellent tale of overcoming a pattern of destructive behavior with the help of others. You could learn a thing or two from it to correct your douchebaggish behavior on the Internet.

A penny could drop through dried cement quicker than it would drop for you. I've been one of GPs resident arseholes for close to 3 years now.

That surely is something to be proud of. Well done!

Seconded. I feel bad for victims of accidents or circumstance, not people who make poor choices.
Yet another person who didn't actually read the article.
What else is new.

I read it, Jackass. I still have no sympathy for the shit the guy went through. Respect to him for getting through it, but not sympathy.
Get off your high horse asshole.
I love you too. *smooch*
Dick.

You are the one accusing people of not reading the article because we don't necessarily feel supportive of someone who made his own choices in life. I, too, read the whole article, and throughout the entire thing, I had no sympathy for him. If he made the choice to call in to work just so he could play EQ, he deserved to get fired. No excuse for that. The man was making bad choices left and right, and I've no sympathy for that.
So you don't give a "shit", but you take the time out of your day to say something stupid in an attempt to feel superior to them?
Gotcha.
Don't we all?

I give a shit about protecting free speech, and the addiction angle is the new hotness.
Good article that gives the real reasons for gaming and gambling addiction, though I feel that addiction is still the wrong word.
:: Tips hat to the recognition of the game not being to blame but merely the "sand" he stuck his head in. And to recognizing that the problem was that he needed to focus on what he was hiding from and face those problems. ::
Excellent. Too bad it won't phase any of those "Pay us thousands of dollars to blame the 'sand' you're hiding in so we can 'cure' you." quacks.

+1. I agree completely.
The final quotes on this article need to be shared with the "experts" who do "studies" on video games. This article expresses the truth that no one reallyl wants to say, and most people have ignored it for so long that they think this isn't the truth. It really is a sad state of affairs we're in at this particular moment in this topic.
It always good to hear a story about someone over coming there addition!

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy! Stop supporting big media and furthering the criminalization of consumers!! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/
I had two roomates in college who chose to let a game become their life other than deal with the harshness of real life responsibility. One was an angry, bitter person suffering with such a superiority complex (common in universities) that he was frankly better off wasting away in Everquest. The other guy was just plain lazy.
Is "Andrew" one and the same as "Senior GamePolitics Correspondent Andrew Eisen?" If so, give that man his props, damn it!!
Well it wasn't me. I don't read Kotaku regularly. Only when GP references an article or when it comes up in Google.

Jesus Zippy, just read the article. It's good and well worth the time.
"It's good and well worth the time."
That's what people said about GTA4. They were wrong.

Which I know you can do on some level.
Nothing against those who enjoy them but damned if I can find the fun in Everquest, World of Warcraft and other games of that ilk.

I like the genre (fantasy, D&D, RPG, etc), but I much prefer solo play. I'm glad they include hirlings in some of the games, like Dungeons & Dragons Online and Guild Wars. I just can't get into this play and chat thing. It would probably be easier if it were speech, but then, I don't like speaking anyway. It's not that I'm anti-social. I just prefer to keep my active gaming and socializing seperate.
Of course, when it was all text based, that was a different story. I miss DELPHI. :(

Gaming and socializing is exactly why I enjoy MMO's. I can pop online and chat with my buddies over TS while playing one of my favorite games. I love that, considering I tend to get bored playing SP games because of the fact that there is no social interaction.
While I agree that its an interesting read, I enjoyed it when I found it on kotaku, is this article related to politics much?
Tangentially. Game addiction is one of those topics the pro-regulation folks like to grab onto so it's interesting to hear from someone with first hand experience.
