Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

November 6, 2009

Developer Epic Games has released a free, Unreal 3-powered development kit that will allow students, schools, researchers or fledgling game developers the ability to experiment with 3D game technology.

The Unreal Development Kit (UDK) can be downloading at the UDK website. The UDK is free for noncommercial or educational use, and a variety of licensing options are available—including a revenue sharing model—for anyone creating commercial content. This specific development kit is for the PC platform only, though Epic is considering console support in the future as well.

Epic notes that over 100 campuses already make use of Unreal Technology as part of their curriculum, including University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State University, The Art Institute system of schools, Drexel University, Westwood College, DeVry University and Atlantic College.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

If you are a game platform. Nintendo has a revenue share of 35/65 Nin/dev for Wiiware games.

But since this is merely a game engine, I think 25% is a little excessive.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

25% iis more than normal. You have no idea how much work it is to build a game engine nightwng. We're lucky they're allowing something more than modding now.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

Nice.

Hopefully it comes with a tutorial project like Red Edit and some other stuff like it does.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

If anyone is interested, Unity also has a free version. This use to be the $200 Indie version and they just dropped the price to $0. Unity, while not as powerful as UDK, it does come with Windows, Mac and Browser support.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

What's the difference between this kit and the one that is offered on the Unreal Tournament 3 CD?

"God, is that you?"

"No! It's a me, Mario!"

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

This kit allows you to create stand alone games while the one that came with UT3 requires a copy of UT3 in order to load and play.

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

Thank you very much for your reply! I'll be downloading that now. I have Crysis games as well, so I'll find the kit for that as well.

Going to download this now. Even though I may not play around with it it's always great to have and take the opportunity to take advantage of this.

Thanks again for your reply!

Re: Epic Releases Free Unreal Development Kit

I just with Epic would quit wasting time with UT and give Jill of the Jungle and Jazz Jackrabbit a reboot.

I'm a CS senior and this is the first time I heard that my university uses UE3

Valdearg: Honestly, the only thing I can imagine is the plaintiffs think it's their religious right to perpetrate violent criminal acts against homosexuals. Unfortunately, knowing some folks like that, it wouldn't surprise me if they did believe that.

Valdearg: @AE: I know, right? The only thing that law does is make a violent criminal act more severe if it was motivated by a hatred of homosexuals.

Andrew Eisen: What's amazing is the folks at that Law Center can't seem to read plain English that states that nothing in the law restricts someone's right to think what they want or say what they want.

Valdearg: But, hey, people are capable of anything when they use their religion as justification for their blatantly bigoted behavior.
Posted 02/09/10 at 10:35am
Valdearg: It's amazing, that anyone with any humanity, whatsoever, would challenge a law that adds protections to a group of people who are excessively targeted for violent attacks, based strictly on who they are.
Posted 02/09/10 at 10:33am
Valdearg: Essentially, he claims the law infringes on a Catholic's God Given right to express their beliefs. This is only true if he believes it's his God given right to use someone's homosexuality as motivation to assault, murder, or maim them.
Posted 02/09/10 at 10:32am
Valdearg: Catholic Zealot Tom Monaghan's Catholic Law Center challenging Hate Crimes legislation, a law that adds protection for homosexuals against violent, criminal attacks.
Posted 02/09/10 at 10:30am
Valdearg: Yet another example of "Catholics behaving badly".

Valdearg: This comes on the heels of Sarah Palin telling the Teaparty Convention to pray for Divine intervention to stop the Progressive tide. It seems she succeeded in recruiting the big man to offer some help. >.<

Valdearg: @A_L: I'm hearing that, as well.. It seems the dems aren't just losing seats via elections... :(

DarkSaber: Did he design Big Murtha Truckers 1 & 2?

Shadow D. Darkman: DarkSaber: (EDIT) IDC really, it's just good to see some new stuff here.

DarkSaber: @Shadow If the on-going spat in China over WoW counts as "new" at least. Does anyone here REALLY give a shit about the state of chinas game industry anyway?
