Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the Holidays

December 8, 2009 -

Just in time to disappoint legions of juvenile videogamers for the holidays, Common Sense Media has released a list of 10 games that should be avoided for younger players.

Actually we jest, because the list, entitled 10 Cool Games That Are Uncool for Kids, does a decent job of offering safe alternatives for each title it recommends that parents avoid. The full list, with substitutes in parenthesis, follows:

  • Assassin’s Creed (Mirror’s Edge)
  • Borderlands (Infamous)
  • Brutal Legend (Ghostbusters)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Battlefield: Bad Company)
  • Dead Space: Extraction (Deadly Creatures)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (Braid)
  • Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony (Batman: Arkham Asylum)
  • Demon’s Souls (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (Overlord II)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (C.O.P.: The Recruit)

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Look likes Common Sense Media did not use that much common Sense.

  • Assassin’s Creed (Mirror’s Edge)

I'm going to assume that's Assassin's Creed 2.  Mirror's Edge is not a great alternatives, This game has you running from Cop and you can use pistols against them.  Although I like Mirror's Edge, I don't know if it will keep your child playing.

  • Borderlands (Infamous)

Infamous is violent (on the teen-rated level) and you can have Cole do bad guy stuff which I don't think is very much a good idea.

Brutal Legend (Ghostbusters)

Brutal Legend is not really my game.  Ghostbusters, well I'm not a fan of this series.  But it's not going to be fun for a long time, trust me.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Battlefield: Bad Company)

Well, I'm glad Common Sense media got it right when they mention about the "No Russian" mission being skippable.  But Battlefield: Bad Company still has that Modern Warfare looks on there.  So it's not going to matter, they look both similar.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony (Batman: Arkham Asylum)

As people said, Batman: Arkham Asylum has a lot of violence.  Batman breaks bad guys arms and legs which is not something your children would like to see.

  • Demon’s Souls (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves)

And I thought they didn't couldn't get stupider.  Uncharted 2 has you shooting bad guys, while Demon's Soul has you play as a knight wielding sword and play like Elder Scrolls 4.  What's more violent, people getting shot up or monsters being killed by sword.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

"Brutal Legend is not really my game.  Ghostbusters, well I'm not a fan of this series.  But it's not going to be fun for a long time, trust me."

Well, unless your a fan of Ghostbusters like myself, cause if so, you'll be amused with it for a long time.

But I'd buy Brutal Legend just to piss off Activision even more.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

It's not the violence, per se, it's going from an M-rated game to a T-rated game.  As has been mentioned multiple times.

So relax.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

I know, it just that some of these alternative T-rated games are still not suitable for kids out there. Who would give a 6 year old Uncharted 2? I know Battlefield:Bad Company has the Modern Warfare look and it wouldn't have matter if you bought one of the 2, It still has the same level of violence regardless of the rating. Common Sense are not smart on alternative game. Some of the alternative game are not suitable for kids trust me. It really doesn't matter, a kid will get his/her parent to buy Modern Warfare 2 for them.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

"Who would give a 6 year old Uncharted 2?"

The list of alternative games were not meant to be suggestions for 6-year-olds.  They're meant to be alternative suggestions for 12 - 15-year-olds.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

What I find funny about about this is that most of you don't have much common sense. Only a few have read the whole articl and not just the cut from GP. They are talkiong about gifts for 12- to 15 year old teens wich falls under the "T" rating for those who don't understand the ESRB raiting system. Yes "T" rated games fall under those guidelines they are recommending. Although some of the choices are questionable (and some are lying on bargain bins) at least they are not yapping like ignorant turds saying "Video games are evil and they are to blame for society's problems".

Instead of acting like ignorant fanboys be thankful that at least they are acting coherently and not like Jack Thompson's Bastard Child Army.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Still, a not-so-well-informed opinion is still an ignorant one. The people just don´t know squat about games, as I mentioned before about Arkham Asylum. They just read "Batman", and automatically is a "safe game for tha kidz".

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Dude, what part of the whole "teens, not kids" comment that you replied to did you miss?  There is nothing wrong in my opinion with someone 12-15 years old playing Arkham Asylum.  Under 11, not so much, but THATS NOT WHO THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Um.. can't you shoot people with guns in Mirror's Edge? Also Assassin's Creed's superior storyline and surprising educational value means nothing then? I would say Oblivion is a better substitution for Dragon Age, but alas its also rated M, even though it's what I would call a "soft" M.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

well in actual sense Oblivion was rated "T" till some THIRD PARTY MOD changed that by removing the bra's on female characters..

i'd love to know when hacks/mods (illegal on the console versions no less) began to take effect over a games rating.

like hot coffee.. in the ACTUAL mode it was not but dry humping, whereas the one that the media constantly cried about had a THIRD PARTY mod adding nudity.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

It was a third-party mod that used actual files in-game that were left by the developers.  THAT'S why the media wouldn't shut up about it.  It came out that T2 wanted it, deactivated it, but left everything in-game to be reactivated with one file.

I don't know about Oblivion, though.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

infamous is a good alt huh? a game where you have the ability to not only be the good guy, but are easily more tempted to be the bad guy as it covers your own ace in a bad situation?

a game where you'll actually get XP for killing people, not much unlike the rather entertaining accusation of getting "points" for doing the same thing in GTA games?

gotta laugh at the entire list really :) those alts aren't nearly any better than the originals, the only differance being in blood. remove blood from most any M+ game and assuming it has mild use of language or other things, it'll almost always get an easy T rating.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Yeah, apparently blood ups a video game from T to M. Who knew that that woul be the magical component that made a game fit for adults and not teens?

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

It's the same in film.  Excessive gore, even without language (which would never happen) will put a movie to R instead of PG-13.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

true true, as an example its kinda funny how the original GR games have an M rating, whereas the GRAW ones got a T? alls they lack from the original is more blood and a decent story with realistic non-linear mission work.

funnier yet, GRAW has a Language stamp on it, where the original only had violence and blood :)

Got L4D2 (haven't played it yet: no PC rig powerful enough), got GTA:CW DS (played the shit out of it), and gonna try and get DS: Extraction.

Suck it, Common Sense Media!

Here is a better list, try to put in games that are ok, and don't talk about games that you don't want parents to buy.

Because if they don't know the bad games, then the parents will only follow by the list they recive.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Actually, listing the games that shouldn't be bought for kids is a good idea. The fact is that many parents buy games in total ignorance and often don't check the games that they are getting.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Honestly I don't think Common Sense Media has a clue as to what video games are good for kids even if they don't know what T rated games are good for the kids or not.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Braid is an awesome game, but it is not an acceptable substitute for Dragon Age: Origins.

For Dragon Age we can easily substitute it with Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Lost Odyssey… You get the idea. There are a lot of T-rated RPGs to choose from.

Please note that I am only speaking about Xbox 360/Wii/Nintendo DS substitutions, as I don't have a PS3.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

I also have to question their alternative choices. Uncharted 2, Infamous, and Bad Company 2?  Not that they are bad games but really? One of their problems with Borderlands was "human enemies used as target practice". How is that any different from those other games?

Just saying it would be nice if they explained why they chose those alternatives.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

While the games they say aren't for kids is decent, I have mixed feelings about the alternatives. For one, some of these alternatives are excellent games such as Infamous, Battlefield Bad Company, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 (I have all four), but they are still pretty violent and really can't be recommended for younger kids. Others like C.O.P.: The Recruit or Deadly Creatures are more appropriate but really just aren't as good gameplay or ratings wise. I think they just looked for ratings with T or lower without looking exactly why it was rated, without playing it themselves, and/or checking reviews. Also, it should be note that Brutal Legend has a content filter that removes gore and cursing.

I can't believe I actually agree with them on one thing. If someone says they want DLC for GTA 4, Batman: AA is a WAY better gift. That game is freaking awesome.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Are you shitting me?  REALLY?

"

  • Assassin’s Creed (Mirror’s Edge)
  • Borderlands (Infamous)
  • Brutal Legend (Ghostbusters)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Battlefield: Bad Company)
  • Dead Space: Extraction (Deadly Creatures)
  • Dragon Age: Origins (Braid)
  • Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony (Batman: Arkham Asylum)
  • Demon’s Souls (Uncharted 2: Among Thieves)
  • Left 4 Dead 2 (Overlord II)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (C.O.P.: The Recruit)

"

So, one should switch Assassin's Creed ( I assume they mean Assassin's Creed II) With Mirror's Edge?  That game where, while on the run from enemies intent on hindering your movements, you jump from roof to roof and steal firearms to shoot them with?  Genius.

Switching Borderlands for InFamous?  REALLY???

Switching Brutal Legends (which, in my opinion, has one of the best parental controls I've seen for a game, forcing you to decide if you want to hear the swearing and see the 'gore' during the intro video, aside from being one of my favorite games this year) for Ghostbusters?  They're really not that different.

Switching MW2 for Battlefield: Bad Company?  Did they even PLAY Bad Company?  Not only was the game mediocre, but it's about as violent as MW2.

I don't know anything about DS:E or Deadly Creatures.

Switching Dragon Age for Braid, an interesting mix between time control and Super Mario gameplay?  That's like switching a 50$ cheeseburger for a taco.  Two COMPLETELY dissimilar games.

Switching the Ballad of Gay Tony (which I haven't played, though I have downloaded) for Arkham Asylum?  Really?  Do these people just make shit up on the spot?  There's no way they've done research on Arkham Asylm.  That game had one of the most kick-assedly violent hand to hand fighting systems I've seen in years.  You know, breaking arms, ribs, etc.  Yeah, that's so much better than a GTA game.

Demon's Souls for Uncharted 2?  Is shooting foreigners that much better than an RPG where you can die, but regain your life and your lost health by killing the right demon?

Left 4 Dead 2 for Overlord II?  Aside from the obvious fact that Overlord II sucked horrendously, they're not all that different, violence-wise.

And I've never played these last two, so, you know, whatever.

Honestly, I think Common Sense just has a vendetta against good games.  Maybe it's jealousy concering their lack of success.

If stupid came in different flavors, these people would be Baskin Robbins.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Yep, inFamous. It makes sense. Electrocution is sanctioned by some states.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

I would play all these games except for Braid, C.O.P., & Brutal Legends. Yeah the replacements for some of these games doesn't make sense.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

And what the hell is wrong with Brutal Legend or Braid?  They're both great games. Brutal Legend was actually one of the best games my wife and I played this year, far better than MW2, in my opinion.  And Braid was a very interesting platformer.

Or are you one of those 'mainstream only' gaming types, who never ventures outside of what everyone else is playing? I mean, Brutal Legend was made by Schafer's Double Fine studios, and I've yet to play a game they made that wasn't well worth the cost.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Well even though I haven't played Braid or Brutal Legend, I am not into playing music games or a guy that has a guitar & looks like Jack Black. But the concept of Jack Black as a look like protagonist is pretty cool. I do give kudos for the game though. Which I'm pretty sure the game is funny. Just I'm not interested in Brutal Legend. Now if a friend of mine had the game, yeah I would try it out, but to me it's not worth my money. Now to other people, hey be my guest & play it like yourself. You sound like you are having a lot of fun w/both the games. I'm more of an RPG & MMO person. & as for Braid, it's not what I would play. Again more kudos to you. :) But I can't knock it till I try it.....

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

I haven't played Braid, so I can't comment on it, but as for Brutal Legend, it was a day one buy for me. But, along with being a day one buy, it was also a game that fit into a niche and has been put on the back burner after just a couple days of play. Its hard to categorize the game within genres, because it has elements of driving, action rpg, and rts and I can easily see how it wouldn't be a lot of people's idea of an outstanding game. I mean, I like the game, and was looking forward to it, but I still only played it a limited amount before switching over to Demon's Souls(which is even more niche if you ask me) and Borderlands. To me, the game is good but not great, and makes for a good thing to pick up for maybe an hour or two every once in a while. Its definitely not a game that I could sit and play for hours on end like I can the other two I mentioned.

Or CoD4, since it really is a blast with friends. MW2 can suck my nuts though for taking away dedicated servers and killing mod support.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Um... Bad Company was not that violent at all. No blood, no stabbing people with ice picks and no being stabbed through the chest. The only thing is that the game says Sh*** ocassionally. And were not getting into the arguement that shooting people=shooting people with or without blood that's a whole different subject. But the level of gore and blood, it's obvious that Modern Warefare is the more violent game.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

That's my 'To Buy' list sorted then ;)

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Yeah, I found some of those alternatives surprising too.  Until I read the actual article:

"In choosing our alternatives, we stuck with T-rated titles geared for ages 12-15, and we matched gaming systems -- so if you nix an M-rated PS3 game, you can replace it with a similar T-rated PS3 game."

Let's replace Zombies with a threesome!

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

So the only requirement is that they're on the same system?  This group really needs a new name.  "Common Sense" just doesn't fit them.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

And that the game has a T rating.

Note to parents: The rating is a guide.  Pay attention to the game's content.  Just because it's T doesn't mean it doesn't feature content you'd find objectionable.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

I admire their goal here, but their research could use work.  Some of their suggestions make sense (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company), but most have little to do with the original game.

Mirror's Edge and Assassin's Creed both feature free running, but that's where the similarities end.

GTA is a gun-based sandbox crime spree while Arkham Asylum is a Metroidvania game focused on fist to fist brawling and exploration.

The real "WTF" moment for me, though, is Dragon Age and Braid.  I'd be hard put to find two less similar games. (Well, I guess they could replace it with Rock Band or DDR)

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

CSM did again at proving that they actually don´t have any "common sense" when it comes about games.

Their alternatives just show that they don´t make any research about anything. In Batman Arkham Asylum, you can crush the legs and arms of the inmates. In Mirror´s Edge, you can shoot policemen.

In almost every game they recommend you can shoot anybody. Ignorance at its finest.

I cannot help but snerk:

Dragon Age: Origins  This is a masterly crafted but combat-heavy game featuring decapitations and swords plunged deeply into monsters' chests.

...and also the bits where you can seduce the dishy, snarky male assassin regardless of your PC's external genitalia.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

While the subs are mostly pretty stupid, but it recomends a good game in place of a bad one (Braid>DA)

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Nearly every alternative game they offer is a title I would not let children play either.  This list might take the cake as the most idiotic "evil games" list ever- even moreso than that zombie=cannibalism nonsense or even the list that had unreleased and obscure japan-only games on it.

"Common Sense" is one of those terms that immediately make me stop listening- right alongside "truth", "moral", or "racist".

It saddens me that groups like CSM and the PTC still exist but relatively reasonable groups like NIMF are dead.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

NIMF was actually pretty stupid and I will dedicate a Halo 3 forge map to the end of that idiotic ogranization if only the confederation of dumbf**ks alos known as PTC will go down.

Never underestimate the power of idiots in large amounts.

Never underestimate the power of idiots in large amounts.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Well, the PTC is pretty much a joke, and I think most people will see it as such. As for the NIMF, they were not much better than "Common Sense". Relying on junk science, scaring parents into thinking violent games will turn their kids into degenerates, etc. I know they publicly disavowed Jack Thompson, but that's like Pat Robertson saying he wants nothing to do with Fred Phelps.

With the Lion & Lamb Project disbanded, Thompson disbarred, the NIMF closing, and the PTC a fringe group that appeals to the most conservative, Common Sense Media is really the last group making any noise.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Hey, on the bright side, at least they aren't encouraging parents to burn games and protect thier children from the evils of video gaming. In fact, they ARE suggesting other games, and still encouraging parents to buy video games for their kids, just not the "bad" ones.. Overall, this isn't too bad.

I mean seriously, they call themselves Common Sense Media, and yet half those suggested replacements aren't anymore kid friendly than the games they replace. Maybe they like Uncharted 2 because it mainly revolves around a white American killing foreign types?

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

What the heck? Infamous? Bad Company? Batman Arkham Asylum? Uncharted 2? Overlord 2?

Not bad games in the slightest (well, C.O.P I've never heard of, so I can't voice an opinion on that) but obviously they haven't been looking at anything apart from the ESRB rating on the front. Mind you, it seems that they run on a binary opinion, seeing as the titles I mentioned are barely skirting the M rating.

Re: Common Sense Media’s 10 Games to Avoid for the ...

Never heard of C.O.P. What is the synopsis of the game?
