Global PC Game Sales Rose in 09

March 10, 2010 -

The PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA) has issued a few bullet point statistics from research into the status of the worldwide PC gaming market.

The group’s Horizon Report stated that the global sales of PC gaming software rose 3.0 percent from 2008 to 2009, totaling $13.1 billion last year. The industry has taken a remarkable turn towards digital distribution, which is reflected in the report—less than 20.0 percent of all revenues in the category were derived from the sale of retail boxed copies.

The report, authored by DFC Intelligence, claimed that the “high-end subscription” game market suffered from a lack of new releases and a declining number of users of older products. Additionally, free-to-play and social networking games caused PC game revenue to “decline in some markets.”

GP asked PCGA President Randy Stude, who is also a Director at Intel, if the drop in retail boxed sales worried the organization:

Not in the slightest. Piracy has forced the majority of new gaming markets to turn to new business models. The number of gamers playing non boxed games is roughly double the boxed game market. This is fueling massive growth and revenues for companies that are supporting these models. PC gaming grew 3% in a year where boxed games saw a reduction of over 10% worldwide.

In response to a chicken and the egg-type question over whether a lack of retail shelf space for PC games contributed to lower sales or if lower sales contributed to shrinking shelf space, Stude stated, “PC gaming doesn't need shelf space anymore. Digital distribution and online gaming were born on the PC and will continue growth for years to come.”

Lastly we wondered what it was like for someone like Stude—an Intel man—to work alongside competitors such as AMD (AMD Division Manager Ritche Corpus is the PCGA’s Treasurer). Stude offered:

In the PC industry we are all part of a bigger vision. With over a billion PC's worldwide we must cooperate with each other or our platform becomes stale. We sit alongside each other in a vast number of forums aligned to the common goal of growing the PC industry and continually innovating.

So it continued to "die" last year then, lol.

Yeah, PC gaming is dying, pirates and used game sales are really taking their toll! I mean, wow, sales going up from last year despite a recession!?

PC gaming is screwed.

Re: Global PC Game Sales Rose in 09

I am surprised as much as they are tying to kill it with sub par ports,DRM and just unfinished products....

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy! CP/IP laws should not effect the daily life of common people! http://zippydsmlee.wordpress.com/

Copyright infringement is nothing more than civil disobedience to a bad set of laws. Let's renegotiate them.

Re: Global PC Game Sales Rose in 09

I definitely have contributed to the decline of boxed sales. The last PC game i've bought in box was F.E.A.R 2 or Wrath Of The Lich King (can't remember which). Its just so easy and much simpler than juggling a bunch of boxes and CDs.

Re: Global PC Game Sales Rose in 09

PC games has stayed normal for shelf space over the past 4 years.  Target still has the most shelf space out of the big 4 stores, followed by Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and finally Game Stop.  The only store that HAS lost PC game Shelfspace is Big Lots, and that's because they haven't been getting much overflow from the other stores, but still amusingly is that the only other video game overflow that they have been getting (and much less than the PC games) is from PS2 and Wii games.

Goth_Skunkand repeats the cycle, over and over. Presently, the far left culture is overreaching, and is about to lose their stranglehold on power.07/06/2015 - 10:01pm
Goth_SkunkAs far back as the 60's, according to the writers. The culture war moves in cycles from one generation to the next. The left rebels against the right, takes over, overreaches to the point where the right rebels right back, takes over, overreaches ->07/06/2015 - 9:58pm

Andrew EisenNo argument there.07/06/2015 - 7:46pm
Matthew Wilsonwell it would benefit Reddit to fix that asap. when of of the work on the site is done for free, there is no reason not to give them 1 of the few things they are asking for (better communications).07/06/2015 - 7:45pm
Andrew EisenRight and THAT'S what she appears to be apologizing for.07/06/2015 - 7:39pm
Matthew Wilson@AE the thing is it wasnt the firing in of it self that people got upset about, its the lack of communication. this would not be a issue if admins would just communicate more with mods.07/06/2015 - 7:39pm
Andrew EisenI don't get the sense she's apologizing for firing one of their employees. For all we know, they could have a very good reason for letting her go. But yeah, hopefully Reddit's subsequent actions speak louder than Pao's words.07/06/2015 - 7:34pm
Goth_SkunkIf Pao is directly responsible for the termination of Reddit's AMA co-ordinator, then good for her for owning up to her mistake. If she wasn't, smart business sense to take the fall. It will all be in vain though if she can't earn back the trust she lost.07/06/2015 - 7:23pm
