Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

April 6, 2010 -

In response to CNN’s RapeLay coverage, a Japanese artist has penned an open letter to the network decrying its reporting of the matter.

Nogami Takeshi wrote that his career began drawing hentai manga (sexually explicit anime comic), though most of his current work was described as non-hentai manga. As such, Nogami calls himself “well qualified to object to the views you present.”

After noting that, “... we Japanese enjoy one of the most safe and peaceful societies on Earth,” Nogami admits that Japanese society does have its problems, but that, “I frankly do not think that you are the ones to tell us [about the problems]."

He continued:

It also goes without saying that human trafficking and violence against women are serious crimes in Japan too. As a Japanese citizen, I am deeply offended by the insulting implications of that so-called expert who associates Japanese people at large with heinous criminals.

After admitting that hentai is detrimental to the “upbringing of children,” Nogami writes, “Those products are developed for rational adults. You surely don't believe that a rational adult would be influenced by such a game into committing rape, do you?

Nogami closes by quoting a passage from the Bible.

Yeah, I think he more meant that America of all places shouldn't be correcting them on morality.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Not that I agree with CNN here, but whenever I read the phrase "we Japanese" followed by some tooting of one's own horn, my alarms go off. Looking at the comments on the open letter, quite a few of them agree that he's talking out of his hat regarding how sex-positive Japan supposedly is and regarding women's rights. (See: women-only train cars because of too many guys groping them.)

Of course, there's also an agreement on pr0n games not being the cause, and of this not deserving nearly the amount of coverage it's getting.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Well, from what I've read, Japan has a huge problem with unreported sexual assault. However, banning hentai won't have any impact on that. A cultural change towards more freedom is what's needed, not a minor step in the direction of even LESS freedom.

While women in Japan are routinely assaulted in a culture that regards sexual assault with either mock outrage or a knowing smile and a lascivious wink, the idea that Japan is "one of the most safe and peaceful societies on Earth" is ridiculous. Sexual assault is neither peaceful nor safe, and the fact that it often happens on crowded trains (where one would think a woman ought to be safe) makes it even more terrible.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I don't suppose you have any ideas for how to effect such a cultural change?

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I think it's wrong to basically ban the Japanese people from voting on the poll. Just shows CNN is not a very good news outlet. I have been told by many a service member that CNN especially is run by the Democrats. I have seen little Republican stances on that news outlet. Unfortunately it plays all through out the airport. Can't change the channel either. I wish I could.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Dear news outlets:

Please shut up about Rapelay. You're NOT being original, you're NOT informing anyone, you're grasping for ratings by talking about video games in a negative light.

Sincerely, everyone on Earth who's tired of hearing about this.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

*sigh*

I doubt anyone will get what I'm trying to say, but I always feel like just about no one will ever actually get it.

The only thing CNN is out to get is money. Regardless of their political stance, the only reason they bothered to report about this in the first place is for more ratings. In the long run of things, they have no power to ban these things, all they do is show erroneous reports about things [They can't even get things right about what's going on in their own country, why bother worrying about getting things right in other countries?]. Screwing with their polls isn't going to show them anything, it'll just give the people who handle the website just more headaches.

Banning games like this will not solve anything. The problem of misogyny is so deeply rooted in the majority of societies out there [not just in Japan and America] it's pretty much impossible for it to ever be solved, unless people start admitting that the things they think just may not be right. But oh noooo we can't have that. Because that'll be thought crimes, and we can't punish people for thought crimes! Perish the bloody thought!

But it doesn't really matter. People don't really care about that. As long as they can get their hentai and porn without censorship, they could care less about what happens to the world. I can understand that mindset [although I could live without the majority of porn.]

And before anyone starts, I AM NOT SAYING THAT THE GAME SHOULD BE BANNED. I DO NOT WANT GAMES LIKE RAPELAY AND THE LIKE TO BE BANNED IN ANY WAY. I THINK THAT ARTISTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN ANYWAY THEY LIKE. I AM NOT THE ENEMY AT ALL. I just wonder whether or not things like this is just an example of a certain problem in society we have towards women, among other things.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

IMO The problem society has towards women is that it wants to make them into a special protected group but at the same time tell them they are just like everyone else. This contradiction leads to inane zero thought rules trumping logic and reason.

As a large and well mixed society we do not need to create groups with special status, we are constitutionally all equal under the law and alot of the libel, gender, race, creed and unfair work environment rules and laws need to be overhauled and leveled with huamnity in mind not just you are X or Y.

The USs obsession with sex, nudity, ect is more disturbing than japan and Europe's is as we in the US hate our body/body image are told cosntantly tis an evil and vile thing...no wonder we drool and chase after it so much....

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

IMO The problem society has towards women is that it wants to make them into a special protected group but at the same time tell them they are just like everyone else. This contradiction leads to inane zero thought rules trumping logic and reason.

The only thing women want is to be treated the same as men has been for centuries, not be a special protected class as you're putting it. While the situation is better than it was 100 years ago [Women can vote! They can get divorced! Spousal rape is a crime now! ...in the majority of states], it's still far from perfect. Objectification is still a huge problem, as well as general nasty attitude towards women. Then there's abortion rights which the US is having plenty of issues with.

Sure, there are the crazies that think like that and want to ultimately wipe out the male gender from the face of the planet, but every group has their crazies, and in a lot of cases the crazy ones are often the loudest, and people listen to the loudest. Of course, the feminist movement is not without its own share of problems. One of the bigger issues is about race and privilege--feminism in the US is often seen for something for white women as opposed to all women of all races, at least that's what I gathered.

As a large and well mixed society we do not need to create groups with special status, we are constitutionally all equal under the law and alot of the libel, gender, race, creed and unfair work environment rules and laws need to be overhauled and leveled with huamnity in mind not just you are X or Y.

In a perfect world, you'd be right. But this isn't a perfect world. The reason why there are "groups with special status" is because the alternative solution, changing people's underlying attitudes about certain groups, is a helluva lot harder to do, and half of the time seems impossible [and that's true for, dare I say it, most people sadly]. The "special status" is there so that the marginalized groups can be protected against those who in the majority who want to take away certain rights from them for a multitude of reasons. It's not about taking away the rights from the privileged, it's about making sure all groups have the same rights. And no, this method is far from perfect, but it's one of the only few people have.

The USs obsession with sex, nudity, ect is more disturbing than japan and Europe's is as we in the US hate our body/body image are told cosntantly tis an evil and vile thing...no wonder we drool and chase after it so much....

And I don't recall ever saying that the US was better than any other society in that regard. In fact, I pretty much said that all societies suffer from this problem in some fashion, though the US seems to be louder about it, though I find it really hard to believe that body image issues is not a big problem in Japan. And I'd say this issue goes back to stereotypical attitudes that people hold about men and women.

Least it wasn't on Fox "news".

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

You know for all the crap Fox News gets, at least they are nowhere near the censorship nazis that the folks over at CNN are.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I'd say it would be better if it was on Fox because a lot of people think CNN is less biased than Fox.

Then again Fox has better ratings (I think).

Yeah, Fox News is the #2 cable channel(behind USA Network) as far as Nielsen ratings go.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Thanks Takeshi-sensei for showing CNN (well Kyung Lah to be exact) that rape game does not a person rape people.  That's like saying if I play GTA, i become a carjacking crook.  Also I like one of your work, Strike Witches.  I might watch that (even though I'm getting tired of the moe fad) to show my thanks for you.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Can't say I'm familiar with Takeshi's work.  Frankly I find that a lot of hentai has undertones of sexual violence, and I find it disturbing as hell, and I don't think the prevalence of those fantasies reflects positively on Japanese culture.

But as long as they're just fantasies, they should be legal.  Free speech is free speech, whether or not it's speech I personally approve of.  Keep this stuff out of the hands of minors, sure -- and Takeshi clearly agrees that it should be -- but adults should be able to read, write, draw and play what they want.  If I don't like it, I can and do exercise my right not to read or play it.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

But why shouldn't children not be allowed to play the games? Afterall the argument I hear most often in support of free speech is that all media is important for those growing up as it helps develop their own sense of morality and that even the most mindless media contains important ideas that need to be heard.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Movies, comics, and music do not go into the details about the negative effects that sex can have on people and frequently portray it as a positive thing. Children are ignorant of the negative side of the argument (most of the time) and to allow them to believe that going off and having sex like a bunch of free-loving hippies is a good idea is pretty poor judgement. An adult is usually someone that can understand this is fantasy because they are aware of both the positive and negative effects of their actions. Essentially, children are ignorant and can't be expected to make proper decisions because of this. When they stop being ignorant is not necessarily by age 18, it could be 13 or 60 depending on the individual, however a standard number makes things easier when determining laws and such.

I don't see why the media is making a big deal out of obscure Japanese hentai games and comics though, especially when I am constantly bombarded by songs about having sex, getting drunk, or getting someone drunk to have sex with them every time I turn on the radio.

"sexually explicit anime"

That's probably supposed to be manga.

Also that screenshot isn't from Rapelay, it's from Artificial Girl 4.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I was just about to point this out myself.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Interestingly, CNN has had a poll up on their website ( http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/ ) for days asking if Japan should ban the sale of sexually violent video games, however they have reseted (and slightly reworded) the poll at least twice because "no" was winning over yes, and has since blocked Japanese IPs from voting in the newer polls.  As of posting this "no" is once again ahead on this (at least third vote), with 63% of the vote.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

"and has since blocked Japanese IPs from voting in the newer polls"

Oh wow. They're asking for opinions on an idea that would have the most impact in Japan and are going out of their way to stop the Japanese participating in it. That is low man, really really low.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Given that I have caught CNN selectivly 'moderating' posts in order to get the 'right' feedback, this does not surprise me in the least.  They really want to control the perception of how people are reacting to thier stories.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I thought that controling the perception of the viewers was the sole purpose of the news networks. Fox, CNN and MSNBC mold reality as they see fit and then feed half truths to their viewers.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I have seen this poll on 4chan. "Yes" can't win.

CNN will keep on resetting the poll until they get the result they want, so they can report how majority wants rape games banned.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

Just doing my part, fuck yeah.

But really, Japan (and the rest of the free world) is free to allow whatever games they want (well, EVERY game) if they are true supporters of free speech. Clearly, CNN is not, however.

Re: Manga Artist Objects to CNN RapeLay Coverage

I agree with Nogami Takeshi to the extent that he declares CNN to be the wrong organization to make any claims remotely tangenital to reality in any form whatsoever.

(Feel free to replace CNN with any given major American news organization as your political and/or nationalistic leanings may direct.)

Well JP is an intresting place stll have a large under current of non reported sexaul crimes. Still even with that its better than the US LOL
