The serial killer game we covered here on GP last week appears to be just an elaborate hoax.
A post on the RPG Codex forums, where the “fake” developer (Crimson King) discussed his creation, led us to a post on the SomethingAwful forums, in which an entry attributed to Crimson King, or the YouTube user who posted the original video, states that the game is a hoax.
The culprits, if it’s really them, opened up on why they performed such an experiment:
The purpose was to gather statistical information for a University project. We reviewed individual YouTube accounts, as well as the forum posting history of various users who expressed interest in the game, to determine if they are also avid players of other extremely violent games. We paid special attention to gamers who sent us PM's with extremely disturbing, sexually explicit content suggestions. There's a lot of you out there. We only needed the statistics of around 100 users, though we've ended up with much, much more than that due to how quickly the game has spread.
Even this explanation needs to be taken with a grain of salt however, as Crimson King, on yet another forum where he enticed gamers into believing the game was real, wrote, when asked why he would go to such trouble, "Because I can? Do trolls need legitimate reasons to do what they do? It was fun and I was bored."
Additionally, GameSetWatch points us towards the forum in which Crimson King reportedly unveiled the game/hoax, RogueTemple.com, where a post imparts one person’s theories on what might have happened:
• He was doing an university project to study the reactions of people to such a controversial theme
• He was just a high level troll with flash skills and some spare time
• The project raised the expectations far too high and scared the hell out of the developer
• Personal reasons caused the developer to dismiss it, fearing it would affect his life.
• Someone hacked all of his accounts including bay12 and youtube, impersonated him and deleted everything (that person is probably seeking him physically now, to finish his cleaning rampage)

Someone better makes this game.
Re: Serial Killer Game Most Likely a Hoax (and Possible ...
Why? i dont see the point to this sort of game. too much focus has been put into shocking game content and normaly at the expence of the game play. over and over again its been done, shock value runs out and its just another game. i would rather developers spend time developing games that draw you in with great game play or new ideas.
this trend of re hashing slashers and porn is old , dull and lacks imagination

There is no such thing as originality anymore. Not in computer/video games, movies, books, or any other form of media. When you've experienced one, you've experienced them all.

Actually, the game video looks like it is built on an established gameplay and genre. So All the focus on game play has been done by thousands opf people over the lsat 20 years or so. While it mau not bring anything "unique" to the table, the game would play well enogh for fans of the rougue like genre.

Well, let's see:
Even if the claim that it was a university project really was fake, I'll put down a sum of internet cookies that some Anti-Freedom of Speech/Expression crusader will STILL claim it was a vaild university study and that it "proves" people who play violent computer/video games are a threat to the "family values" of good people everywhere. Heck, I'd even throw in a side bet that it's mentioned either in another filing with SCOTUS or even in their oral arguments.
If it's a real university project, then it's a disaster for university projects everywhere because, if nothing else, it PROVES the bias design and misleading information intentionally spread by such "projects" and "studies". Such a project clearly does NOT discern between an individual who can tell the difference between fiction and reality. After all, fiction should have NO limitations while reality DOES. Liking extreme fictional content does NOT mean that an individual would like such acts in reality. Of course, the Anti-Freedom of Speech/Expression crusaders intentionally mislead their audience into believing otherwise simply because they are unable to tell the difference between fiction and reality themselves.
Still, even ideas come from "trolls" as well. Since said individual admitted that their idea wasn't real, then, really, it should mean they give up all IP Rights to the idea. If someone else actually developed such a game, the "troll" should get NO credit for the idea whatsoever.
Heck, I, myself, have had some ideas for some pretty extreme adult games. But my lack of programming experience (which I'm attempting to rectify) has kept me from developing them. It certainly hasn't been because of my fear of controversy. I certainly wouldn't let someone else's Anti-Freedom of Speech/Expression beliefs stand in my way as so many others have.
