Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

October 25, 2010 -

As the case surrounding a law he originally authored makes its way to the Supreme Court next week, California State Senator Leland Yee issued a handful of comments related to what will eventually be a landmark decision for gamers.

The Court will, of course, hear oral arguments for Schwarzenegger v EMA on Tuesday, November 2 at 10:00 AM.

Yee said he was “hopeful” that the Court would give “parents a valuable tool to protect children from the harmful effects of excessively violent, interactive video games.”

Yee additionally claimed that SCOTUS has "often ruled" in favor of protecting kids and limiting their access, citing topics such as "pornography, gambling, marriage, firearms, jury duty, tobacco, alcohol, voting, abortion, licenses, and the death penalty" as examples.

Yee continued:

Parents – not retailers or game makers – should be able to decide whether or not their children can play in a world of murder and violence that often degrades women and racial minorities. The video game industry should not be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children.

The state senator continued to claim that the interactive nature of games makes them “vastly different” than other forms of media, saying that their immersion “results in a more powerful experience and potentially dangerous learned behavior in children and youth.”

Yee added:

… parents can easily discern if other forms of media are appropriate for their children, whereas violent video games can contain hundreds of hours of footage with the most atrocious, racist, and sexist content often reserved for the highest levels.”

COMPARING VIDEO GAMES TO THE DEATH PENALTY??????????

This is perhaps one of the most insane things I have ever heard somebody say about videogames apart from Jack Thompson.  What in the fuck is wrong with this guy?  Seriously, the leap in logic needed to make such a statement is huge.

I sure hope that Mr. Yee is just making such an outrageous statement only for news bites and doesn't actually believe this.  If he does, then he is not mentally fit to be in charge of anything.

I'm removing my post after making an immature comment, I actually had a knee jerk reaction to the stunt

Re: Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

Yee said he was “hopeful” that the Court would give “parents a valuable tool to protect children from the harmful effects of excessively violent, interactive video games.”

1.  Parents already have a plethora of tools to help them decide what they want their children to play and not play.  Those tools are effective and don't infringe on anyone's rights.

2.  There is no evidence that "excessively violent, interactive video games" are harmful to children or anyone else.

3.  Are there any video games out there that aren't interactive?

"Parents – not retailers or game makers – should be able to decide whether or not their children can play in a world of murder and violence that often degrades women and racial minorities."

They already can and do, dipstick.

"The video game industry should not be allowed to put their profit margins over the rights of parents and the well-being of children."

It's not.

… parents can easily discern if other forms of media are appropriate for their children, whereas violent video games can contain hundreds of hours of footage with the most atrocious, racist, and sexist content often reserved for the highest levels.

You're a liar, Yee.  You disgust me.

I'm Getting Sick and tired Of Liarland Pee Pee Yee. His Stunts make me see hime as a corrupt politican(like congress and the CA state legislature)

Re: Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

"Liarland Pee Pee Yee"?  For fuck's sake, man, how old are you?

Way to make gamers look like mature adults who want to take the high ground and engage in rational debate.

Re: Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

Meanwhile, Yee continues to spin, lie, and hide behind children to justify his lies and anti-American activities like a coward.

Don't act like ignorant motards like Yee, the PTC, the "CS"M, and others against the industry really want to "take the high ground and engage in rational debate" either, because they're afraid to engage in such debate.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Hornets, Jack Thompson can geaux chase a chupacabra. Hell will stay frozen over for quite a while since the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Pelicans. Solidarity for the Saints = No retreat, no surrender. 2013 = Saints' revenge on the NFL. Even through the darkest days, this fire burns always.

And that, my friends, is what we call a strawman.

Show me in my post where I say Yee is taking the high ground.

He isn't.  Obviously.

That doesn't mean we should stoop to his level -- let alone knock the bottom out of it like Phx just did.

Re: Yee Delusional, says he's “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

No, that doesn't qualify as a so-called strawman, unlike the spin doctor Yee's brainless one.

And Phx did not stoop down to any level(let alone knocking the so-called bottom out) considering that there is no level to stoop down to when dealing with worthless turds like Yee(as the mainstream news media only cares about catering to the lowest common demominator). He was calling Yee exactly what he thought of the jabroni. If he wants to call that assclown "Liarland", until GP says he can't, he can.

Re: Yee Delusional, says he's “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

"No, that doesn't qualify as a so-called strawman"

Yes, it does.  You suggested I was defending Yee, plus the PTC and a bunch of other people I never even mentioned.  I did no such thing.  Strawman.

"And Phx did not stoop down to any level"

Of course he did.  Are you really suggesting to me that calling someone "pee-pee" is mature discourse?  Really?

"worthless turds"

Yeah, that's pretty childish too, duder.

"until GP says he can't, he can."

No shit.  At no point did I say otherwise (which, you know, makes that another strawman, but who's counting?).  I didn't say he couldn't say it, I said he was acting like a child.  I stand by that.  Because seriously, "pee-pee".

Re: Yee Delusional, says he's “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

I'm done with this immature disscussion

I'd hate to say this, But Leland Yee is the most immature Individual(Not to mention Having Delusions of Granduer like our ole pal Jacky boy) in the state of california

We can all settle this after Swartznegger v EMA has been decided in favor of us(after that, I'll be semi-retired as a GP member)

I Don't want to get in trouble here

Glad to hear it.  Wish you'd been done with it yesterday.

I'm just trying to make a joke here, and for the record I'm 21.

Gee, if only there was a way for parents to educate themselves on the matter.  Maybe if the game had ratings of some kind.  Some sort of an entertainment software ratings board.  Oh wait, there is.  It is the organization whom, against their will, you are trying deputise into a government entity by giving their ratings force of law.

Also the comparisons of death pentalty and alcohol to video games?  Honestly?  Really?

-Ultimately what will do in mankind is a person's fear of their own freedom-

Re: Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

Actually, he isn't trying to deputise the ESRB or use their ratings system.  The Bill objects to game with "intense violence" against "sufficiently human-like characters," as well as other vague descriptions that could be used by prosecutors to persecute the gaming industry almost at random.  How could salesclerks possibly know beforehand which games will get them in trouble, until law enforcement busts them?  They could sell a T rated game, and police might be forced to fine them for breaking this law just because someone in the State gov't objects to that particular game.

Re: Yee “Hopeful” for SCOTUS Win

It will make marketing games on a nation wide scale impossible, just like the film industry in the days before the MPAA

Andrew EisenThere were two comments other than Kochera and Tito's. One pointed out the Escapist Code of Conduct, another comment was in support of Tito.09/20/2014 - 12:40am
Andrew EisenKochera privately expressed his disagreement on how Tito decided to do something. No, I don't consider that crossing a line nor do I consider the exchange an example of the group pressuring him.09/20/2014 - 12:36am
Kronotechnical reasons. Anyways, I need to get to sleep as well.09/20/2014 - 12:29am
KronoAnd he wasn't the only one pushing Tito to censor the thread. If Tito had bowed to peer pressure, we likely wouldn't have gotten this http://goo.gl/vKiYtR which grew out of that thread. Said thread also lasted until a new one needed to be made for09/20/2014 - 12:28am
Krono@Andrew So it's an example of Kuchera crossing the line from reporter to advocate. And an example of the group pressuring for censorship.09/20/2014 - 12:21am

E. Zachary KnightKrono, I read nothing of the sort in that email chain. I read Ben giving advice on what to do when a forum thread is used to harass someone and spread falshoods about them and others.09/20/2014 - 12:05am
KronoThat's exactly what Ben Kuchera was doing to Greg Tito.09/19/2014 - 11:58pm

E. Zachary KnightI write for a number of blogs and talk to people who write similar blogs all the time for tips and advice. I see nothing wrong with that.09/19/2014 - 11:50pm
