A new study finds that girls who play games with a parent behave better, share a deeper connection with family and had stronger mental health. Sarah Coyne, professor at Brigham Young University's School of Family Life is lead author of the study.
The surprising part about this for me is that girls don't play video games as much as boys," says Coyne. "But they did spend about the same amount of time co-playing with a parent as boys did."
The study tested 287 families using age appropriate games. Girls seemed to dig such games as Mario Kart, Mario Brothers, Wii Sports, Rock Band and Guitar Hero. Call of Duty, Wii Sports and Halo ranked the highest among boys.
When measuring positive results, researchers did not find any benefits to boys playing with a parent.
Researchers added that the reason boys were different from girls could be because they probably spend a lot of time playing games - often with friends.

I don't get it. In what way is an image of a girl playing a videogame "pornographic"?

I'm guessing they didn't test a controlled group of ages then? CoD and Halo certainly aren't age-appropriate for many children who would be at an age where they were still living at home and playing games with their parents.
Not that I have a problem with mature kids playing games of this nature when a parent or two is actively involved in them and doing the whole parenting thing, or that I have a problem with the findings of the study - just noting the discrepancy!
With regards to the results, my Dad actually got me, his eldest daughter, and to a certain extent my sister, into video games. 25 years later and it's still our favourite thing to do together; I have a very close-knit family and a great relationship with my dad, but whether or not I'd attribute that to video games specifically is tricky. Surely any fun activity you spend a lot of time on with your parents will bring you closer?

I suspect this is a comment on the Mormon roots and thus "Christian focus" of the university which allegedly might color their research findings.
However, I've seen little evidence that research from BYU is biased by religious views and BYU is a well-respected university. I wouldn't dismiss research from BYU out of hand.
