Sex in Games Leads to Real-World Rape and Other Ridiculousness

Boy oh boy, do I have a treat for you today.

FoxNews has posted an article examining the violent and sexual content of the upcoming Bulletstorm and I’m happy to report that it’s the most entertainingly sensationalistic tripe I’ve read in quite a while.

Bulletstorm is an M-rated shooter due out later this month from Epic Games.  Aside from copious profanity and over-the-top violence, one of its notable features is its in-game awards system, Skill Shots.  Basically, you get funny-titled awards for dispatching your enemies in unique and gruesome ways.  Here’s how the ESRB describes it:

“The names of some Skillshots are infused with sexual innuendo (e.g., Gag Reflex, Rear Entry, Drilldo, Mile High Club); one Skillshot (i.e., Fire in the Hole) allows players to shoot at enemies’ exposed buttocks.”

And here’s the FoxNews description:

“The in-game awards system, called Skill Shots, ties the ugly, graphic violence into explicit sex acts: "topless" means cutting a player in half, while a "gang bang" means killing multiple enemies.”

Confident that kids as young as 9-years-old are playing such games, FoxNews spoke to psychologist Carole Lieberman who claims that sexual situations and acts in games has led to real-world sexual violence.  “The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games,” she said.  (AE:  Just for fun, I’ve included the government’s rape statistics chart as this article’s pic.)

The article goes on to mention the ESRB’s rating system but immediately points out that Senator Joseph Lieberman and others say the system is “useless, because it isn’t enforced at retail.”  Of course, the ratings are enforced at retail, just not by the government.

To be fair, FoxNews does include comments from game-friendly notables such as the ECA’s Hal Halpin.

“Between a great ratings system, parental controls on the consoles and the major retailers inhibiting the sale of Mature-rated games to minors, the matter is really one for parents and adults to consider, individually.  I respect the creative rights of game developers to make a game like Bulletstorm in the same way that I appreciate Quentin Tarantino’s right to make over-the-top movies like Kill Bill."

Be sure to check out the full article and fulfill your day’s quota of belly laughs.

My favourite part of the article is unrelated to sex, though.

Video game publishers traditionally stay glib about the issue of violence. […] Remi Sklar, the vice president of Public Relations at Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment, which makes numerous video games (though is unconnected to Bulletstorm), offered the following statement: “We don’t have a comment for that story." [Emphasis mine]

Yeah, it’s really shady and evasive not to comment on something to which you are totally unconnected! Thank goodness Fox News is leaving no stone unturned!

Carol Lieberman is a brain-dead motard who should have her license to practice psychology revoked.

That’s all that needs to be said about her.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Hornets, Jack Thompson can geaux chase a chupacabra. Hell will stay frozen over for quite a while since the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Quite true. And they never have an object for affection on their own side, either. They just rant about Reagan.

Here’s a news flash, Fox et all radical rights: He’s dead. Yes, he was a great guy. But you can’t elect a corpse into the White House. What he wanted borderlines on irrelevant. You can want the same thing. Just get yourself elected and DO it instead of targetting the other side and everyone else for…. not being Reagan.

Yeah, as long as you are doing the lord’s work OR defeating liberals, pretty much anything else is ‘ok’.

Ah.. to have an ethical system based off target rather then action…

years and years ago, maybe i’m misquoting, but the point stands :p

no really, i haven’t seen those movies in what.. 15 years or so.. the only thing i recall anyone sticking to was a line of that level.

haven’t cared enough to watch more than maybe 15 min of the newer ones, and found it far to easy to ignore the series.

this makes not sense whatsoever… so because the kill combos are using sexual names, they’ll then relate into sexual misconduct and rape?

how exactly? thats like saying that the infamous line in the terminator movies "Sayonara Sucker" would make kids suddenly think they are, and speak fluently, japanese.

my brain is bursting trying to figure out how this even connects.. its like saying theirs rape in american games, i’ve yet to find one on the shelf that allows this, even in the porn shops i can’t find any, not that weren’t imported, and they’re all pretty damned tame compared to these accusations no less.

Seeing as how FOX News isn’t afraid to use blatant lies, I’m not surprised anymore. They wouldn’t get away with this in most other industrialised country. I guess complete and absolute freedom of speech is a double-edged sword.

Living in Canada can be a very good thing, you know. We enjoy the universal healthcare and gun-free environment of an European country while getting all of our games released at the same time as in the US.

For your info, Carole Lieberman used to be the Chairwoman of the NCTV. Remember ? The National Coalition on Television Violence, founded by Thomas Radecki, who campaigned against D&D, violent TV, music videos, cartoons, comics, violent videogames (in the early 80’s, already), and so on. Well, after Radecki was caught up in the act, he was replaced by Carole Lieberman : http://keiths-place.com/book/export/html/57

And Dr. Lieberman herself is not totally unknown from gamers. In 1994, during the Mortal Kombat and Night Trap panic, she was comparing video games to drugs :

"Video games have become the new drug of society (…) Parents who wouldn’t allow their child to use drugs are giving them video games. It acts as a drug to make them excited and make them crave more." (source : http://articles.latimes.com/1994-11-18/news/va-64343_1_video-game-playing )

    And in 1999 :

"So the brain not only is seeing the images and getting stimulated, but it’s also practicing a response (…) When the person is exposed to these violent media stimuli and it excites the psychoneurological receptors, it causes the person to feel this excitement, to feel a kind of high–and then to become addicted to whatever was giving him the high." (source : http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,23885-3,00.html )

So I’m not surprised by her last piece of nonsense.
