Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

February 22, 2011 -

SCOTUS Blog's THIS WEEK AT THE COURT says that the court will issue at least one opinion this week (on Tuesday), while a note on Greta Van Susteren's Gretawire blog claims that court watchers should keep an eye out for opinions on a number of cases including Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants. The note comes from Lee Ross, who covers the Supreme Court for FOX News.

The note from Ross can be found below:

From: Ross, Lee

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

I heard the Court will be issuing opinions both today and tomorrow. Either way, it still seems a bit early for this case-we'll probably get a decision on Snyder before we get EMA.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

Unless SCOTUS decides to release both the Snyder and EMA decisions and opinions at the same time.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Hornets, Jack Thompson can geaux chase a chupacabra. Hell will stay frozen over for quite a while since the Saints won the Super Bowl.

Geaux Saints, Geaux Tigers, Geaux Pelicans. Solidarity for the Saints = No retreat, no surrender. 2013 = Saints' revenge on the NFL. Even through the darkest days, this fire burns always.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

That is possible.  they'll probably be close in timeline at any rate, as there is *some* (but of course not perfect) overlap in the issues in the 2 cases.  and of course they were argued only a few weeks apart as I recollect.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

About a month apart. Snyder v. Phelps was one of the first cases they heard oral arguments this term, and Schwarzenegger v. EMA was in the first week of November.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

being ignorant in the legal system, this opinion seems to be an official statement (rather than just, you know, an off hand opinion).

Is this just a little preview in how the discussion is going, or is this the final word of the court?

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

My understanding, which when it comes to the American legal system is in no way complete, is that this is the final word of the court.  Saying it's the court's "decision" may be a bit more clear than saying it's their "opinion".  Though I believe opinion is the technically correct word.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

So I just watched the SCOTUSblog and I guess Shwarzennegar v. EMA wasn't decided today.  Is that correct?

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

I checked The supreme court website myself, They haven't decided it yet

Watching JT on GP is just like watching an episode of Jerry springer only as funny as the fights

America has just became its own version of the Jerry Springer Show after a bizarre moment in Florida involving a carnival worker.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

They have issued a couple of opinions today, but none of them were listed here. Keep your fingers crossed...

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

This could be it, guys!

I'm going to be frequently checking this site for updates all day.............

I can't wait.  If we win, it will be hillarious to watch those idiots at fauxNews be forced to write a piece about how "their side" lost!  lol

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

More likely they'll just never mention it ever again.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

I agree But like beardoggX said, given that the court found that it's vague and that it may offend the 1st amendant rights of adults, I doubt it will pass constitutional Muster

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

What did they say about the first amendment rights of adults again? Its been a while since I read it. I know it would mean stores could stop selling these games to anyone of any age but I don't think they talked about that.

Re: Report: SCOTUS To Issue One Opinion This Week

That is the slippery slope argument. Because of the vagueness of the "graphic violence" section, just about any game could potentially fail the test and be regulated, but noone will know for sure until someone complains. This would eventually result in game stores "playing it safe" and refusing to stock any game that they feel could result in a fine for a mistake.

"This would eventually result in game stores "playing it safe" and refusing to stock any game that they feel could result in a fine for a mistake."

To add to that, it could also result in publishers "playing it safe" by not funding such projects and developers "playing it safe" by not creating them.

Andrew EisenAnd unless I completely missed it, there's nothing in there about "how Pokemon in general is sexist but you gotta look deep for it."11/20/2014 - 5:10pm
Andrew EisenSeriously, you're upset, irked and fearful over an opinion piece that suggests the Pokemon demo would be better with more options and a better-written female character. SERIOUSLY?!11/20/2014 - 5:07pm

Andrew EisenAre you SURE you provided the right link?11/20/2014 - 4:59pm
prh99And yeah that sucks, especially when bonuses are tied to it, but that is more a problem with crappy publisher policies and scoring in general than any discussion on what may or may no be sexism in games.11/20/2014 - 4:59pm
prh99But no one is on their legislative high horse or on the litigation war path, for that matter. The biggest effect is that a reviewer might give it a lower score and drag down their meta critic ranking.11/20/2014 - 4:56pm

Andrew EisenOh for crying out loud. Wonderkarp, I apologize for how rude this question is but seriously, did you actually read that article?11/20/2014 - 4:47pm
Wonderkarpits a stigma. people in power hear this crap and start getting on their legislative high horse. but I feel like we've already paid too much attention too a demo.11/20/2014 - 4:46pm
Andrew EisenHarm gaming how?11/20/2014 - 4:35pm
Wonderkarpcause it gets parroted around and is used by people to harm gaming like Jack Thompsons did with Violence. http://www.themarysue.com/pokemon-oras-sexism/ here's the article.11/20/2014 - 4:28pm
Andrew EisenNo idea why such an opinion would upset or irk you so I'd be interested in reading it. Got a link?11/20/2014 - 4:13pm
Wonderkarplook deep for it....reaching much. those kinds of people are what urk me.11/20/2014 - 4:07pm
WonderkarpI got upset the other day when a known feminist blog wrote a large article on how the demo to Pokemon Omega Ruby was Sexist cause you couldnt play as a girl. It was a Demo....who cares? but they went off on how Pokemon in general is sexist but you gotta11/20/2014 - 4:06pm

NeenekoSomething to keep in mind, we tend to look at physics as 'hard', but math and physics are trivial compared to soc/psych (I have worked in both), but FEELS like it should be simplier.11/20/2014 - 3:17pm
NeenekoI think what tends to make discussing sexism in games difficult is scale, the issues tend to be systemic in nature, but bite sized examples are not... and the systemic part ties into a lot of dry academic stuff requiring domain knowledge not everyone has.11/20/2014 - 3:16pm
Wonderkarpand I jumped for joy when the Cogs went multigendered in GOW. but I also like male protagonists like Kratos or Nathan Drake or Link.11/20/2014 - 2:58pm
Wonderkarp..it needs female options. thats why I prefer biowares games. My Shepard was female(Jennifer Hale <3) and my skyrim player was female. I prefer female characters. But I dont think its a sexism issue. More and more females are coming.11/20/2014 - 2:55pm
WonderkarpMonte, I would argue that with Tomb Raiders sales....remember me though....personally I like games with character customization. I was one of those people miffed at ACUnity over no female assassins. if you give us customization, unless its a sports game..11/20/2014 - 2:53pm
