Free CryEngine 3 SDK Coming in August

April 26, 2011 -

Crytek will soon release the latest version of its game engine technology to the public, joining fee offerings from the Unreal Development Kit and Unity. The Crysis series creators say that the new SDK will be available in August and will be free to use for enthusiast developers.

Company CEO Cevat Yerli hopes that the new SDK will "reignite the modding community." In an open letter to fans, he admitted that Crytek has had few resources to support this area of its business in the past.

"In recent times our focus has been heavily on the development of Crysis 2, however our modding community has been, and remains, very important to us," Yerli said. "In August 2011 we will be launching a free CryEngine SDK. If you want to use it for fun, like all our previous MOD SDKs it will be completely free of charge, to anyone who wants to play with it," he added.

Yerli added that his company will be giving users the "the latest, greatest version of CryEngine 3" - the same engine they use internally to develop its games. He added that the SDK will feature everything from the full engine including C++ code access, content exporters (including LiveCreate real-time pipeline), shader code, game sample code from Crysis 2, script samples, new and improved Flowgraph and asset examples.

Crytek plans to update the Free CryEngine SDK regularly. The company announced plans to release a free SDK in April of 2010.

Crytek also said that it plans to launch an editor for Crysis 2 for PC customers. This software will allow users to build custom content such as maps and items.

InfophileSomething weird was going on with that comment. As soon as I posted it, it looked like it had replies from the past. And now I can't even find it. Ah well, it was getting off-topic for that thread anyway.10/01/2014 - 4:29am
Sleaker@CraigR been using Win8.1 for a while, I don't really see any usability difference between it and 7 (Work uses 7)10/01/2014 - 2:16am
Craig R.Ok, my internal debate was short-lived. If Win10 is still a year out, I'm not waiting that long for an SSD, so on Win7 I will remain.09/30/2014 - 7:52pm
