EA's popular Sims Facebook game continues to soar past the competition. The game developed by EA's PlayFish studio now has 50 million monthly active users, according to social game analytics site AppData. The Sims Social launched last month, attracting almost 5 million players in a very short amount of time. The game picked up an additional 15.5 million players last week to reach 51.5 million MAUs.
The Sims Social is now the second most popular social game behind Zynga's CityVille, which has 74.1 million MAUs. The data coming in on that game shows a trend that its popularity is waning, with around 1.3 million users leaving the game in the last seven days.
"When we created The Sims Social, it was important for us to incorporate the deep gameplay nuances The Sims Studio has perfected and leverage what Playfish does best – develop compelling, cutting-edge social-gaming experiences," said Playfish London general manager John Earner at the time of its launch.
The popularity of the branded Facebook game shows that EA may have finally found a chink in Zynga's armor: branding. We'll have to wait and see if The Sims Social has long-term sustainability like many of Zynga's most popular titles…
