UK Documentary Mistakes Video Game Footage for Real World Terrorism

A documentary that aired on Britain's ITV channel Monday night called "Exposure: Gaddafi and the IRA" has a problem with reality. Apparently the makers of the documentary promised footage linking Libya's Colonel Moammar Gadhafi and the IRA, but mistakenly included video from a video game. The documentary claimed that the Libyan dictator gave the IRA tons of military hardware, and purported to show the IRA members using it to shoot down a helicopter in 1988.

But fans of Bohemia Interactive's military simulation game, ARMA 2, noticed the footage and immediately began calling it out in the company's community forums. The clip in question was actually made by a fan of the game and put on YouTube. Fans in Bohemia's forums posit that the documentarians accidentally confused that video game footage for the real thing - though anyone reading the comments would note it being called out as pure fraud.

Bohemia Interactive CEO Marek Spanel was surprised to learn that its game had made its way into a documentary. He told Gamasutra that ITV did not contact the company for permission to use the footage.

"We were not aware of this video," he said. "We have no idea how this footage made it to the documentary. Our games are very open and allow users to freely do a lot of things. I see this is somehow a bizarre use of creative freedom."

An ITV spokesman has told UK mag The Telegraph that they actually have real footage of a British army helicopter being shot down in 1988 but used the video game material by mistake. If they really want to clear up any further confusion about this they should probably post it online.
