Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

December 21, 2011

A quick note to anyone buying the Humble Indie Bundle 4: if you want Steam keys you'll have to pay at least $1 USD for the bundle. According to the official blog for the promotion, some "un-humble" buyers are paying one cent for the bundle and using/reselling the Steam Keys to game the Steam Holiday promotion currently underway. More from the blog:

"Hey guys, we’ve noticed that a number of un-humble users are buying lots of Humble Indie Bundle 4’s for one penny, and then using their Steam codes to 'legitimize' automated Steam accounts in order to increase their odds of winning prizes in Valve’s current raffle promotion. This is unfair to legitimate entrants and is definitely not what we wanted to encourage with Humble Indie Bundle 4. It’s a lose-lose situation for the indie developers, charities, Valve, and Humble Bundle.

Therefore, starting immediately, new orders under a humble threshold of $1 will not contain Steam keys.

If you can’t afford a dollar but still need a Steam key and promise not to resell it or otherwise abuse it, please contact our support team with your humble appeal and we’ll purchase a new bundle for you on a case by case basis."

While some might complain that this goes against the whole "pay-what-you-want" nature of the bundle promotion, others argue that spending a penny and then trying to manipulate a rewards system is much more nefarious.

I fully support what they've done. They also went the extra mile by offering the Steam key options to those whom DID buy the bundle legitimately and not to abuse Valve's raffling system. Sadly, there will always be jerks in this world that try to get ahead using highly questionable methods.

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

Someone's always got to abuse the system and mess it up for the rest of us.

Hmm I didn't think the payment processors The Humble Bundle uses would allow a payment that small, oh well. It's too bad cheapskates want to game the system for chance to get free stuff on Steam. A dollar minimum seem plenty fair given how much one gets from buying a bundle.

I am going to boost my payment, I really want them to break 2 million and every bit helps.

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

Cheap, cheating bastards...

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

0.01$ COSTS them money and then somebody use it to game the Steam users? Look Humble Bundle, I'd still be behind you if it was 2.50$...

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

I felt like a cheapass when i only paid $6.50 for the fourth bundle. I paid $15 for the second bundle, and i cant remember what i paid (maybe $5) for the inversion bundle (i think that's what it was called)

Anyone paying only .01 isn't being cheap, they're being stupid. Anyone with a credit card, paypal account, or whatever else has at least a couple dollars. If you don't what the hell are you doing spending ANY money on video games? Further what are you doing spending time playing video games if you don't have even a couple dollars to your name? Go mow a lawn, shovel a driveway, or something to make a couple bucks.

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

That's fucking uncool. I'm behind Humble Bundle on this. I'm just glad that the entire thing was able to breach $1 million (closing in on $2 million).

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

They still have 5 days left. I am seriously hoping they break $3million. They need to break their record.

Re: Humble Indie Bundle 4 Steam Keys Require $1 Minimum Purchase

Seems fair to me.  Having to pay a dollar instead of a penny shouldn't really be that back-breaking in terms of finances even to the cheapskates who are coughing up the bare minimum.

E. Zachary KnightSome reading material for Microsoft on its used games blocks. That will hurt the console more than helping. http://ezknight.net/?page_id=20505/21/2013 - 2:18pm
james_fudgeyeah good luck with over the air TV05/21/2013 - 2:12pm
E. Zachary KnightBut what if I want to only watch over the air tv? I don't subscribe to pay tv. I never will. If that is a requirement, then MS wasted 45 minutes telling me how great TV will be.05/21/2013 - 2:08pm
james_fudgeEZK it will depend on your provider, just like HBO Go i'd imagine.05/21/2013 - 2:05pm
PHX Corp@IanC there's also a chance that those titles might be Xbox one exclusive, but it's too early to tell afaik05/21/2013 - 2:03pm
IanC@E. Zachary Knight - MS certainly got the checkbook out for EA, so no surprise on how negative they are over the Wii U.05/21/2013 - 1:54pm
MaskedPixelanteSo now I have to wonder, how many of EA's games are skipping the PS4 because of their pro-used stance?05/21/2013 - 1:53pm
E. Zachary KnightOn the TV front, does the XBox One require a cable/satellite subscription or will I be able to use my over the air channels?05/21/2013 - 1:48pm
E. Zachary KnightAlso, that name was not one of the options on our poll.05/21/2013 - 1:42pm
E. Zachary KnightThis presentation also shows why EA has been so negative about the Wii U. They have had a massive hardon for the XBox One forever.05/21/2013 - 1:42pm

E. Zachary KnightQuote: Are developers forced to create games that have these online features, and are thus not playable offline? They are not, Xbox exec Whitten said to Wired — but “I hope they do.”05/21/2013 - 1:40pm
E. Zachary KnightThe Wired article I linked to earlier has a different story. While it will be possible to play offline, that is a game to game thing, not standard. http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/05/xbox-one-analysis/05/21/2013 - 1:39pm
Andrew EisenAccording to Geoff Keighley, Don Mattrick says Xbox One is not always on. https://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/33690727595023155305/21/2013 - 1:35pm
Andrew EisenJust like how Sim City needs the cloud for various computations. (Note to anyone unaware: Sim City does not need the cloud for various computations. That was a barefaced lie by EA Maxis.)05/21/2013 - 1:24pm
MaskedPixelanteSo all in all, more of the same, with the possibility of used game restrictions and always on DRM disguised as "cloud computing".05/21/2013 - 1:20pm
Andrew EisenAbsolutly zero gameplay footage. Doesn't look like there are going to be a lot of games ready to launch by the end of the year.05/21/2013 - 1:12pm
E. Zachary KnightThey didn't talk about any of the other exclusives. I guess they are saving that for E3.05/21/2013 - 1:06pm
