Nikkei is reporting that Kazuo Hirai will take on a much broader role within the company as its new President. The former President, Howard Stringer will remain as the CEO and chairman of the board, according to the report.
Stringer was named president in 2009 in the hopes that he could turn the company around as its PS3 console battled both the Wii and Xbox 360 for dominance. In 2011 he oversaw the cleanup of one of the biggest security breaches in the company's history.
Hirai was given a new title earlier this year overseeing Sony’s consumer electronics and PlayStation divisions. Many believed that Stringer would step down at some point in 2012 anyway, so this news isn’t exactly a surprise..
