Game OverThinker Discusses Life After SOPA

January 26, 2012 -

The internet certainly isn’t wanting for videos that focus on the particulars of why legislation like SOPA and PIPA are unmitigated piles of horse dung.  Heck, this week’s Extra Credits episode is just such a video.

But if you’d like to see something a little different, check out the latest Game OverThinker episode in which Bob Chipman, better known as MovieBob over at The Escapist, forecasts what our post-SOPA futures might look like.

The video's over 10 minutes so if you're pressed for time, here's a taste:

“Piracy has become a big enough problem that some form of anti-piracy legislation is going to be passed at some point in the near future.  Hopefully, if we keep up the good fight, it will not be as draconian and inherently corrupting as SOPA was but it will happen and it will fundamentally change huge chunks of web culture.  And while that won’t be pleasant for many, they will be necessary changes.”

Chipman goes on to clarify that these changes aren’t exclusive to internet users’ horizons and that the entertainment industry itself has a lot it’s going to have to adjust to.

“It’s time for the movie and games industries to bite the bullet and accept... that they basically got three choices: lose all your money to pirates, waste all your money fighting legal battles through nonsense like SOPA which will never, ever eliminate the problem, OR you can continue to make money, albeit slightly less than you’ve probably grown used to, at least at first, by slashing prices and wait times by embracing digital distribution.”

Like many web shows, Game OverThinker starts with a skit.  If that kind of stuff doesn’t float your boat, skip ahead to the 2:45 mark.
