Black Ops Earns Guinness Book Record for ‘Best Ending’

Normally when you imagine someone getting in the Guinness Book of World Records, you correlate the entry to some kind of effort being involved. Someone eats 1,000 eggs, or juggles for 24 hours, etc. But with the new Gamer’s Edition of the book they have added a new category called "the Best Game Ending" and allowed about 13,000 fans to vote. Now there's nothing wrong with fans voting on things, nor does the fact that they did for the book invalidate the conclusion, but it is kind of an odd addition to a book that generally requires some sort of accomplishment – usually steeped in the kind of rigorous undertakings that can cause physical and mental harm…

Anyway, I say all this to preface the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops has won the Guinness Record for "Best Video Game Ending." In the eyes of those who voted for it, Black Ops beat out the likes of Heavy Rain, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Portal, Red Dead Redemption, God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Halo: Reach.

Huh?!?! Call of Duty: Black Ops ending was standard fare "shooter" type stuff? My vote would have been (for recent games and in no specific order) inFamous, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Portal, or Red Dead Redemption. Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn't even "cinematic" in nature.

Baffled….. can we get a re-vote with actual customer opinions?

  2. tallimar says:

lets see… 4 CoD titles, 3 halo titles… lowest ranked halo title (halo CE) beating out all bioware and bethesda titles, halo better than final fantasy…. did they only poll XBL preteens?

  3. Hevach says:

I thought the Guinness book had a specific policy about subjective records? Hence why they don't have a "best movie" but do have categories for most profitable, most ticket sales, etc.

  4. Mr.Tastix says:

The Gaming Edition of the Guiness Book of Records is such a massive joke. They can't fill it up with actual records so all they pull subjective crap from their ass instead?

Call of Duty: Black Ops has the best ending in a video game? Are you freakin' serious? And how the hell does Super Mario Bros have a better ending than any of the listed BioWare games? You spend hours looking for a dumb broad and then find her. That's the entire game right there.

How many of those 13,000 do you think were prebubescent male kids who think Call of Duty is the "next big thing"? Quite frankly, it's just insulting at how many games with good endings didn't make this list.

  5. Kajex says:

I know that this list is entirely subjective (and therefore shouldn't even be in a Guinness Book), but the fact that Final Fantasy 6 isn't on this list proves that the list is utter crap.

  6. tusharnene says:

three halo games in the "top twenty"?  four call of duty titles in the top 50? shadow of the colossus at 24?  bro games in the "top two?"

i'm sorry, which 13,000 gamers did they survey?

  7. DorkmasterFlek says:

Yeah, what the others said already.  This is subjective.  It's crap.  Guiness is just trying to remain increasingly relevent.

  8. tusharnene says:

guinness world records are always something quantifiable.  the number of variables involved in voter opinion is astronomical, with a great number of qualitative factors that have no numerical bearing.

normally i'm all for games getting some exposure but how in the infinite hells can this be considered even a little bit valid?
