Ryan G. Van Cleave Prepares for the Release of a Second Game Addiction Book

Amazon has a product page up for the hardcover edition of Ryan G. Van Cleave's newest book on game addiction, "You Know You're a Video Game Addict If…" You may remember Van Cleave from his first book, "Unplugged: My Journey into the Dark World of Video Game Addiction," which detailed has extreme addiction to World of Warcraft. It's a cautionary tale, for sure. For instance, one of the lines from his new book might end the sentence, You Know You're a Video Game Addict If… you wear an adult diaper so you don't have to get up from your computer… (a detail he offered when promoting his first book).

All kidding aside, some people do get addicted to games, particularly MMO's ( I attribute this to certain types of personalities that get easily addicted to anything done in excess, but we'll put that aside for a moment), but Van Cleave's proclamations as he goes around the country promoting his new book are pretty extreme. For example, speaking to the Star Gazette (a newspaper in the Ithaca and Binghamton, New York area), Van Cleave said that "we're experiencing a near global epidemic of people with an imbalance in their lives, thanks to digital media in general and video games in specific."

A global epidemic? Game addiction is now equivalent to AIDS?

Of course, he says all these things to promote his book and a $109 a head seminar on game addiction being hosted by the Family Service Society Training Institute on March 23. The group claims that "80 – 90 people" have already signed up for the six – seven hour seminar on game addiction.

But if you really want to know what the new book – set for release April 3 – is all about, then check out the following quote from the Amazon product page for You Know You're a Video Game Addict If…:

"Did you know that one hundred million Americans game over three billion hours a week? One in three British males would rather play video games than have sex with their partner. Gaming isn’t just a pastime anymore, but an actual epidemic! So whether you’re the one gaming or are a parent to/dating a gamer, like it or not we’re all in the gaming world. Packed with trivia questions, hilarious illustrations, and hard-to-believe fun facts, You Know You’re a Video Game Addict If . . . is a hysterical guide to one of America’s most widespread addictions."

I read the entire article in general, He Explains that That Video Games Are Not necessary bad in general, Provided you Don't Over do it to an extreme and I agree with that.

"Games themselves aren't inherently bad. Neither is drinking or even exercising for that matter. But do it to an extreme? Big trouble," at the start of the article

the second part is that My concern That it's a Symptom of an underlying Situation(Family problems, etc)

Third is that like Food addiction, They need to find the source of what could have caused this to happen(see Second part)

forth, if they found the underlying problem, They could be able to prevent it without it transitioning to Problem video gaming(i reiterate that like the Chinese and some people that it could be a symptom of an underlying problem)

and Finally, I would Be more responsible Whenever I play a Video game, go on facebook or Twitter or whatever. Moderation is the key here, But Sadly it'll fall on Deaf Ears throughout America. I did not mean to be angry over this but people are not seeing the situation very carefully over the fact that it may be something else that led to it

And of course, there is still no evidence that gaming is actually addictive — why not address that "gaming addiction" is a symptom of other conditions? Is that not sensational enough?
