THQ continues to cut costs by closing down operations it believes it can live without. Unfortunately for the employees of the company's Quality Assurance operations in Phoenix, Arizona that means a round of layoffs. THQ has decided to consolidate its QA teams into its Montreal location and will be closing its Phoenix, Arizona-based operation in response. According to GII THQ will close the QA center and lay off 57 employees. Some of those employees will be able to transfer to Montreal if they so choose, but Arizona is a long way from Montreal…
"We have made the business decision to consolidate our two Quality Assurance operations into one location at THQ Montreal," the company said in a statement today. "The studio in Montreal is already home to a global team of Quality Assurance professionals. The transition will occur gradually throughout the remainder of 2012 while we continue to manage QA for our FY'13 release slate."
THQ went on to say that some employees would be "eligible for relocation to Montreal" but added that the "final number is not known at this time and will depend on a number of factors." Ultimately the decision to close the Arizona operation was "driven by industry, market and economic trends," according to THQ.
Finally, the company thanked the QA team in Arizona, calling their work "outstanding." Though they mean well, THQ has to know that thank-you's and well wishes are cold comfort when you don't have a job.
