EA’s Firemint and IronMonkey Studios Merge to Become FireMonkeys

Electronic Arts has merged two of its mobile game development studios into one mega-studio in Australia. Firemint and IronMonkeys will be merged into a single studio now known as Firemonkeys studio.

"By aligning the strategy of IronMonkey and Firemint, EA is able to create an even more focused team of passionate individuals who are dedicated to developing high-quality mobile game experiences," the company said in an announcement revealing the merger. "This merge in the mobile space is resulting in positive overall growth for the Firemonkeys team, as the studio is now hiring for several positions. Fans should expect to see progressive development efforts with upcoming launch and project announcements in 2012."

Firemint is best known for developing such hand-held hits as Flight Control, Real Racing, and their subsequent sequels. IronMonkey is known best for developing the iOS games Mass Effect Infiltrator and Dead Space.

Hopefully this move won't result in any more layoffs somewhere down the road. Australia has not had the best luck when it comes to keeping game development studios in business in the last few years. We wish everyone at the new uber-studio the best of luck!
