Nexon America: Consoles Could Go the Way of the Dodo

Nexon America CEO Daniel Kim says that console developers need to take a chance on the free-to-play market, or risk a future where consoles are no longer around as platforms they can rely on.

"Console developers are starting to realize that as well, that unless they make accommodations or think about changing their own business model they're going to quickly go the way of the dinosaurs," Kim told GamesIndustry International. "Free-to-play is kind of like the Indiana Jones, taking that leap of faith – unless you do it there's no other way to continue to grow."

He goes on to say that the best way to tackle a market like Korea is to go the free-to-play route, mostly because of the challenges with piracy in the region..

"Console has never been a strong contender in Korea in particular because of piracy, and just in terms of the business model it really makes sense," he said. "It's really hard to beat free-to-play as an offering."

This is so incredibly short sighted. AAA titles and Indie's alike are still selling millions of copies on both computers, hand helds, and consoles alike; and they're raking in billions of dollars. To claim "if you don't do this your entire industry will die" is quite simply a stupid thing to say.

So a company that to my knowledge releases all of their games digitally these day and to my knowledge has never made a single console game says that consoles could die?

Next they'll tell me water isn't wet.

Free to play is just a piece of the pie, do a normal retail game or digital game then offer it up in episodic form via free to play via all the digital services you can.

Expand your offerings do not limit them to just one or two things.
