U.S. Government Creates Transformers-Like ‘Cheetah’ Robot

The U.S. government's Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) has created a robot that is supposedly capable of outrunning Olympic champion Usain Bolt – and it looks like Ravage, the cat-like Decepticon from Transformers.

DARPA is calling it a "Cheetah" robot, and funded its design (it was designed and tested by Boston Dynamics) for use in "emergency responses, humanitarian missions and other defense missions."

You can check it out in the video to your left.

Same. All told, this kind of project is pretty cheap in terms of defense spending. The bulk of spending is in industrial contracts, most of which just go towards expanding our already ridiculous surplus – things the military itself has been pushing to cut for years, often in favor of more things like this that get neglected by Congress.

    1) This is really old news, they only posted a new video because they hit a new speed milestone.

    2) Andrew is right, the robot is essentially useless. It cannot power or support itself. It's just a measure of how well a system can adaptively control it's own limbs in relation to completely flat but moving terrain.

    3) gamepolitics? i know darpa is government funded, but seriously….. that doesn't make this political.
