As promised, Mob Rules Games has released Haunts: The Manse Macabre as an open sourced project. In addition to releasing the source code for the game (so the community can work on it) they have also released a playable build of the game (Windows). The open source project can be found here.
The news came today (appropriately on Halloween) via the project's Kickstarter page (where it managed to generate over $28,000 in funding -only to fail as a commercial project). Here's what Mob Rules Games' Rick Dakan said on the Kickstarter page:
"Well, [Halloween is] not as happy as we had originally planned, but happier than I feared it would be," Dakan wrote. "I want to thank all of you for sticking with us and for all the kindness and support you've offered in the past few weeks. It's been just plain amazing."
While we're glad that Mob Rules Games has released something that the community can play it's also kind of sad that people who paid real money for this project have basically been screwed out of it by not getting a finished product.. There's a cautionary tale in there for you if you are thinking of funding a project in the future - sometimes things don't work out the way they are supposed to..
