Report: Microsoft Working on 7-Inch ‘Xbox Surface’ Gaming Tablet

Microsoft is building its own 7-inch gaming tablet, according to "multiple sources familiar with plans within Redmond" who have confirmed the details to The Verge. According to that report, the initial hardware planning for the Xbox Surface device is underway. The Verge describes it as a mini Xbox platform. The Xbox Surface device is rumored to contain a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM designed specifically for gaming tasks, though The Verge says that those specs might be subject to change because of an unannounced Intel SoC (System-on-Chip). The Xbox Surface won't run a full version of Windows, instead using a custom Windows kernel.

While the device may support functions like messaging and other small tasks, it will likely focus on supporting gaming. How Microsoft will tie this into their upcoming next-generation Xbox platform is anyone's guess though it is likely that it will simply use the Microsoft SmartGlass features shown during E3 in the summer. Microsoft has not confirmed the existence of this 7-inch tablet device at the time of this writing…
