Ron Gilbert Wants Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion Back

Double Fine's Ron Gilbert wants the Monkey Island franchise back from Disney. The creator of the popular point-and-click adventure game franchise lost the rights to Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion after he left LucasArts. Then the company decided to sell the franchise off to Disney. Gilbert thinks that Disney doesn't know what to do with the franchise and is just letting it languish. He describes the situation as very sad.

"Yeah, I wish I owned Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, you know?," said Gilbert.

Still he also thinks there is very little hope of getting these franchises back.

"[It] just seems to be a company that hoards IP," says Gilbert, "and that kind of worries me."

Maybe his very public lament will get the attention of someone from Disney who would be willing to sell it back to Gilbert or Double Fine for a reasonable price. It can't hurt to have dreams…

Disney's had the franchise for all of a month, it's a bit early to say they're letting it languish. Especially when the only thing we do know about the deal is that they want Lucasarts and Lucasfilm both to substantially increase their release schedules far above and beyond what they've said of Star Wars releases.

And calling them a company that hoards IP is also a bit silly, unless you're talking about how long it's been since there's been a Herby the Love Bug movie. They've got sequels and spin offs of nearly all their old movies, are constantly remastering them – and you've got to buy the new definitive DVD/Blue-Ray combo pack now before it goes back in the Disney Vault FOREVER* (*-for sufficiently small values of forever or until the new 3D Blue Ray definitive version comes out in five years).
