BioWare Founders to be Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at GDC

BioWare's founding fathers – Doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk – will be honored at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco as part of the Game Developers Choice Awards. The founders of the studio that have brought us such hits as Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Knights, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age will be honored with lifetime achievement awards for their "contributions to the art and science of games."

The GDCAs are awarded yearly at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, and are the only peer-based video game industry awards (for game developers as awarded by game developers). Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk will be honored at the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 27th at 6:30 pm at the Moscone Convention Center during GDC 2013 in San Francisco. The ceremony is open to all GDC 2013 attendees. Both Choice and IGF Awards will be hosted with Tim Schafer, LucasArts veteran and President and CEO of Double Fine Production.

Lifetime Achievement recipients are chosen by the Game Developers Choice Awards Advisory Committee, which includes Doug Lombardi (Valve), Mark Cerny (Cerny Games), Harvey Smith (Arkane), Raph Koster (Playdom), Chris Charla (Microsoft), and John Vechey (PopCap).

C'thulu knows I can never forgive these two for allowing EA to completely demolish the potential that SW:ToR had (along with everything else EA devours in their insatiable greed quest), but I wish them the best. These gentlemen are responsible for forming one of the greatest developers in the industry. Their passion and vision that they brought to the table will be sorely missed, and it doesn't seem likely it will be seen again in the AAA side for a while. Godspeed doctors.

I think they are bitter like Stanley Woo. The guy admitted in his blog he had to have the EA HR department bring him in and help realize he hates his job and no longer can worker there and let him go.

But the fact Bioware went around EA's back to bring back Stanley Woo to work for free shows the disconnect they have.

I am still holding out hope Brent Knowles will form a game company and bring back the old crew.

As for Greg Zeschuk I feel he made some terrible decisions helping put in place those currently in charge of Bioware but I wish him well on his quest to brew the perfect beer.

Despite BioWare's hang-ups in recent years I still believe these guys deserve their place.

At the end of the day, these guys helped shape the BioWare I grew up with and loved, and I thank them for that.
