My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Creator to Help Fan Fighting Game Project

Bronies rejoice. Lauren Faust, who is best known for creating My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, has decided to team up with the fan-driven development team Mane6 to bring to life the pony-themed fighting game My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic. Mane6 and toy-maker Hasbro have also been in talks. You may remember that Hasbro sent the develops of the game a cease-and-desist letter which Maner6 quickly complied with. That put their little labor of love on indefinite hold.

To avoid legal trouble with Hasbro, Faust will create a whole new set of characters in the My Little Pony universe that will appear within the game.

"So what does this all mean?" the Mane6 team writes. "It means that with Lauren's help, we are going to finish this game, but it will no longer be based on the MLP franchise. It will be all new characters in a new setting, while keeping the moves, mechanics, and style of the game we wanted to make from the start. This means a lot of work for us, and a bunch of new challenges, but we're excited about the possibilities that come along with them."

I'm a brony and have been a part of GP since 2005/2006! I've seen plenty of videos on this game, which is part of the overexposure I mention in my previous post. The game is cleaner that Street Fighter II, which was pretty clean mind you. I guess what I'm saying is that it's no Mortal Kombat of fighters.

I'm not surprised that the brony audience of GP suddenly appears…  Personally, I'm holding back my initial gag reflex in the feint hope that this might be a fun, clean game that kicks the butts of AAA titles and forces the industry to re-evaluate the games it makes.

Having Lauren Faust join the fangame has been an interesting turn of events. It will be interesting to see what they can come out with. At the same time I wonder what Hasbro's response to this will be. Granted, Faust is no longer part of the show anymore. But here they are trying to shut down this fan project and the show's creator joins it.

While games like 'MLP Online' and 'Fighting is Magic' was hit by C&Ds, there are plenty of other fangames on this show that that can be found all over the internet as well as other fanstuffs ranging from fanart, fanfiction, and animation/films. Other than recently, Hasbro has been rather lax on going after people who create such fan stuff. However like all the Chrono Trigger fangames out there that got served a C&D, I think the 'Fighting is Magic' game had gotten too much exposure both inside and outside it's fandom, and therefore got hit by Hasbro's lawyers.

Best of luck to Lauren Faust and the 'Mane6' team.

As a Brony myself, I'm glad, but I have mixed emotions.  On one hand, I'm very happy Lauren Faust came to the rescue and is actively working on the game with them.  She's always been supportive of the fan community related to whatever project she does.

On the other hand this disappoints me as it sounds as if this will no longer be an MLP game.  However, if it does mean that this is going to be based on her long-in-development Galaxy Girls project instead – and in so doing will help generate awareness enough to finally kickstart it and make it a reality – I'm all for it.

My wife says she also hopes maybe we'll get a few more stallions.

I still have my hopes that Mane6 and Hasbro can work out a deal. Also, they really need to get around to letting Lauren do Galaxy Girls. She's so awesome.
