Electronic Arts announced this morning that it is shutting down three games operated by its Playfish Facebook game development studio. The games going offline on June 14 include The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society. In a statement on its official blog, EA said it was shutting these games down because they no longer get the traffic they did at launch:
"Today we are informing players of the difficult decision to retire some of our Facebook games: The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society," EA wrote. "After millions of people initially logged in to play these games, the number of players and amount of activity has fallen off. For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising."
EA said that its Popcap studio will continue to deliver Facebook properties – much like its popular titles Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz and Plants vs. Zombies Adventures (coming soon).
EA is offering players of the affected games to introduce them to a "Popcap" game. EA did not say what it plans to do with Playfish moving forward, but all these closures do not bode well for the developer's future…
