Ten Thousand Developers Sign on to Develop Games for OUYA

The $99 Android-based home console Ouya, has signed 10,000 developers worldwide that have signed on to produce content for the system, according to what head of developer relations Kellee Santiago told GamesIndustry.biz this week. Santiago, who co-founded Journey developer thatgamecompany and this year moved to OUYA, said that partnerships with larger companies will be announced in the coming months as well.

"The last month I've been so excited to just interact with the Ouya developers, who are really people who signed on to the mission statement of Ouya early on and are the people who are just as excited as we are about the platform," she said. "It's been great to hear and that the number continues to grow at such a rapid pace is very validating."

Addressing concerns that arose from early reviews of "preview units" sent to backers of its successful Kickstarter campaign, Santiago said the console's benchmark tests were done on an "older development system" and that users can expect a quality experience.

"I think it's fundamentally about experiences the developers make," she said. "What are the quality of the experiences themselves? Our goal at Ouya is to empower developers to provide entertaining experiences for the living room."

Santiago went on to say that criticism directed at Ouya has been "encouraging" because it's "all stuff [they] are aware of" and are currently working to address.

"It's great to hear it because we are still in this preview period and we continue to iterate and improve upon the console in a way that no other company can," she said. "For our gamers and developers that creates a very supportive ecosystem for them."

    Doesn't matter in how they decided to implement our "publicity". Basically, I could have just developed on it normally and had just about the same odds. No point backing it at the dev level.

    Great. 10000 you say. How many developer did we have before the crash in the 80s?


    Do not misunderstand, I hope the best for the system, but, I get the feeling there will be no quality control on the console makers end to keep buggy crappy games off the system.
