Poll: How Long Was Your Lengthiest Gaming Marathon?

The year was 1989.  The game was Hero's Quest from Sierra.

My friend Ricky and I started playing it in the later afternoon.  It was not dark yet.  We played that sucker into the night and had a blast.  In fact, we actually beat it!  As we congratulated each other on our amazing accomplishment, we happened to look out the window and notice it was light outside.

It was almost eight in the morning.  We had just played a video game for about 15 hours straight.  It was awesome.

So how about you, dear readers?  What is the longest amount of time you've ever spent gaming?  Have you ever pulled an all-nighter or are you happy with short bursts of gaming goodness?

Vote in the poll and reveal your deep, dark secret to us all!  Then hop in the comments and tell us all about it.  What was the game?  Did you get in trouble with your mom?  Ever miss something important like school, a job interview or a trip to Disneyland because you were too busy grinding XP?  Inquiring (and incredibly nosey) minds want to know.

Don't forget, you can email your stories to us at SuperPACpodcast@gmail.com as well.

The results of this poll are just one of the things EZK and I will yammer about on next week's podcast so be sure to tune in!

In 1987, during my freshman year of college, I bought Phantasie 2 for my Commodore 64, right in time for final exams. Phantasie 2 required a lot of mapping (no auto map feature), so myself and three of the other guys in my dorm played it in two-person shifts, and there was ALWAYS a team playing. For that week, all we did was play Phantasie 2 and take our exams (grabbing food on the way to and from), with occasional snatches of sleep. We beat Nikademus, and all of us ended up on the dean's list for our grades (either high honors or highest honors) 🙂

For nonstop gaming, however, nothing beats the Top Secret marathons (paper RPG) we used to have in junior high and high school. In one 24+-hour session, I think we killed every NPC in the Sprechenhaltestelle module.

As an avid gamer I've had numerous unhealthy gaming marathons but it depends how long an average marathon is.

It's quite easy for me to play a video game all day, only getting up for a few toilet breaks and food sessions every now and again. I tend to only do this when I've got nothing better to do but since half of my job is sitting in front of a PC anyway it's pretty easy to waste a day away.

Most notable recent one was finishing Serious Sam 2 in one sitting and realizing how short the game is when you play it with friends.

  3. Longjocks says:

So many years and so many long sessions. I believe the longest may have been the original Syndicate on the Amiga 500. I started mid afternoon and finished mid morning. The other main contenders would be any number of SSI RPG games, particularly The Dark Queen of Krynn.

I can't remember the titles, but I've played for over ten hours at a time.  When I realized what I'd done, it made me sick to my stomach each time.  It's a matter of wanting to do everything and having time for just the one thing.

  5. Mr.Tastix says:

I did this a few days after the release of Borderlands 2.

I wasn't able to play it at all with my friends on release so I spent a good 2-3 days playing it when I could. Sounds unhealthy as hell but other than sleeping it was all I could do on a cold Winter's day when I was already sick as hell.

    Yay, excuses!

I don't know how long each session was, but I played the original Borderlands for around 45 hours over 3 days. Pretty much, whenever I was awake, I was playing it, so it was like one long session with some sleeping mixed in.

A friend and I played Minecraft for around 12 hours straight when we first started playing it. The time just flew by! We also spent around 8 hours or so on the original Halo long ago.

  7. Mephistopheles says:

I can't remember how long it was… but a friend of mine and I played and beat Secret of Mana in one sitting

Of course, it wasn't our first time playing, so we knew what to do

When Final Fantasy 1 came out on the NES we (my brother and I) rented and played it straight for 24 hours so we could beat it before it had to be returned the next day. We stayed up all night taking turns playing it and I don't recall anyone getting any sleep that night. Good times.

  9. Neeneko says:

Years ago when I was unemployed (right after the dot-com crash), I ended up playing Civ3 for several days strait… no human contact, did not feel like sleeping, barely ate.  I felt a lot better after that and got to job hunting, but it was a great concentrated way to wallow for a bit.

I was at a friend's sleepover birthday party one evening long ago, when I began playing Armored Core on his Playstation.  The sun was rising before I knew it.

  11. Kajex says:

I went on an Ogre Battle 64 binge that lasted a full 28 non-sleeping hours, subsisting on water and oven pizza topped with hormel chili.

I never did beat the game, but that was the best weekend ever.
