As part of its fiscal year earnings report, Nintendo revealed projections for DS software sales for the current fiscal year but offered no guidance on sales for the DS hardware. This would seem to indicate that it plans to halt production of its popular Nintendo DS hand-held system sometime in the current fiscal year.
Nintendo said today that it expects to sell ten million additional DS software units during the current business year ending March 31, 2014. Speaking to CVG, a Nintendo UK representative would only say that "Nintendo will continue to sell Nintendo DS Hardware but is not revealing a unit sales forecast at this time."
To-date the Nintendo DS has sold more than 153 million units worldwide. Only one other console has better sales numbers – the PlayStation 2, which has sold more than 155 million units. More than 933 million units of DS software has been sold since its launch in 2004 in Japan and North America. The system was launched in Europe in early 2005.
