Apple App Store Inches Towards 50 Billion App Downloads Milestone

Apple announced today that its app store is nearing the 50 billion app download mark. Since its launch, the Apple App Store has seen almost 50 billion downloads of various apps for its iOS devices. Apple also announced that the person who downloads the 50 billionth app will receive a $10,000 App Store gift card, while $500 gift cards will be given to the individuals who download the first 50 after that milestone.

The top free apps were Words with Friends Free, Temple Run, Angry Birds Free, Draw Something Free, Fruit Ninja Free, and Pac-Man Lite. Games on the top 25 paid app list includes Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope, Angry Birds Seasons, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, The Sims 3, and Plants vs. Zombies.

With android devices outselling apple by like umpteen:one, and so many apps being free on the android store, why does the apple store put out such rediculous numbers? Are they including songs? Are they including re-downloads? Are they including all software/game updates as new downloads?

Would be nice to know.
