Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

May 28, 2013 -

While it shouldn't come as any surprise, when the Xbox One ships later this year it will be region locked. This is not a big shock considering that Microsoft's last two consoles were region locked as well. In case you don't know what that means - it means you can't play a game sold in Japan on an Xbox One system sold in any other region.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale,” a Microsoft rep told Digital Trends. “We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”

Sony's PS4 will likely be region locked too, because that is simply what console manufacturers do these days. Given the global nature of gaming and the appeal of importing games from other regions this is a shame.

Those holding out hope that the Xbox One wouldn't be region locked can now move on to worrying about all the other things we don't have a clear answer on related to this console...

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

With how Sony made the PS3 and VITA region-free I doubt they will region lock the PS4 because if it's region free that gives them the upper hand over microsoft. But who knows, maybe this time it will be different? I guess we'll find out at E3 or something

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

Just keep in mind that while the Vita itself isn't region locked, you have to have either a memory card for each area you want to play a game from, or you have to reformat the system each time.  So while yes...it is region free...they made it a pain to use and you are forced to buy their expensive cards per location.

Oh wow. That is complete crap. One would think that a file system would be universal. But I guess Sony proved that wrong.

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

Not sure what Zen is on about. You only have to do the memory card switching if you want to switch PSN accounts, since its meant to be a one account system (like the PSP). You can play games from other regions no problem. You can get updates for them too, just cant use DLC from another region to the mentioned one PSN account per device thing.

And I have plenty of Japanese and one USA Vita game for my EU Vita, so i would know.

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

Even so, if it was the way Zen described, it's pay once and the ability is yours for good.

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

You can only have one card per account, per system, per region.  So if you want to play a game from the US, one from Japan, and one from Europe, you will have to have either three cards, with three region based accounts OR you have to reformat your system each time you want to swap which kind of kills the whole "save games" purpose of the memory card.  And you would have to re-download any updates or downloaded PSN titles to boot.

So as I said, it is "region free"...they just make it a pain in the #&% to do it lol.

EDIT - I dug a bit more and see the confusion.  While the cartridges themselves will work fine regardless of where they are from, PSN based games, online pass codes, and DLC do have to function as I described in order to use them regardless of area.

EDIT 2 - Loving the fact I am being "down voted" for what is still acurate information, just was a misunderstanding between the physical versions which are limited for DLC, online, etc., and the completely digital PSN based titles we have had to use the card swap method to use here.  Oh well :)

Re: Report: Xbox One Will Be Region Locked

Xbox 360 is region locked? Yes, and No. It was up to the publisher if the games was locked to certain regions. Hopefully the Xbox One will follow that, but knowing how Microsoft want to fuck this up, it probably wont.

And I would be surprised if the PS4 is region locked, since the PS3 and Vita are both region free.
