While it shouldn't come as any surprise, when the Xbox One ships later this year it will be region locked. This is not a big shock considering that Microsoft's last two consoles were region locked as well. In case you don't know what that means – it means you can't play a game sold in Japan on an Xbox One system sold in any other region.
“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale,” a Microsoft rep told Digital Trends. “We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One.”
Sony's PS4 will likely be region locked too, because that is simply what console manufacturers do these days. Given the global nature of gaming and the appeal of importing games from other regions this is a shame.
Those holding out hope that the Xbox One wouldn't be region locked can now move on to worrying about all the other things we don't have a clear answer on related to this console…
