Shadow Warrior Classic Free on Steam

Shadow Warrior Classic, an updated version of 3D Realms' 1997 game Shadow Warrior, is now available for free on Steam. The free game has been released by developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital, who are also working on a "reimagining" of the game. The remake will also be called Shadow Warrior, and is set for release later this year on Windows PC and next-generation consoles.

The game will try to dispense with much of the humor that made it controversial when it was released in the late 90s (see this wikipedia entry – thanks EZK – for more details on that).

If you need to see how much the video game industry's attitudes about stereotypes and misogyny have changed, you need look no further than this classic first-person action game from 3DRealms. When it was released way back in 1997, 3DRealms brushed aside criticism that the game was somewhat racist because it played up stereotypes about Asians as a way to drive the humor in the game. Much like Duke Nukem 3D, a game like Shadow Warrior wouldn't play very well today if it were new and freshly released.

We encourage you to play it and judge for yourselves. Find it right now on Steam.

Devolver has commented on the situation involving them still charging for it on GOG. Their reasoning is that they never intended to sell the base game, and when you drop down your money on GOG, you're actually paying for the expansion packs which, I believe, are legal freeware, and fully compatible with the F2P Steam version.

    Seems legit.

They are doing a modern version of Shadow Warrior. Unless they pull a full Duke Nukem Forever and embrace the crudeness of the source material, it's probably going to be on par with what most AAA studios who think they can make an FPS can crank out.

uh oh.. i smell a bad "remake" moment.. one of the best, and funniest, parts of that game is hitting on the out of place anime girls and having them attack you….

doubt thats gonna be fully there in any "remake" much like how watered down Duke3D was on its Xbox/iOS release…
