Precursor Games Shuts Down Kickstarter for Shadow of the Eternals

June 5, 2013 -

Precursor Games has decided to cancel its Kickstarter crowd funding campaign for its spiritual successor to Silicon Knights' Eternal Darkness - Shadow of the Eternals. With less than three weeks to go before the campaign ended Precursor was only able to raise a little over $300,000 of the $1.5 million it was asking for.

Precursor CEO Paul Caporicci explained the move recently in an update to the project's Kickstarter page.

"Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we had ever hoped for," he wrote. "Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6."

Caporicci said that the company would not charge backers a dime for the Kickstarter and that pledges made through other channels will be fully refunded via PayPal.

"As we’re closing the current Kickstarter campaign not a single dime from this campaign will be removed from supporters’ accounts and everyone from our website’s crowdfunding campaign will receive full refunds via PayPal. As we re-tool our campaign and continue development, the forums on our site will remain open and active and any interested fans can still join the ‘Order of the Unseen’ to see our progress and join in the fun of creating content for the game themselves."

Wow.  That's some EA-level bullshit right there.

Indeed. Given the numbers here, it sounds more like they got 20% as much support as they were expecting.

We could both be wrong and perhaps a publisher has decided to take the studio under their wing to complete this project?

Maybe it did pick up a publisher.  That's not what I'm getting at.  What I'm calling BS on is the idea that the campaign was shuttered for any reason other than it was a complete and utter failure.  Which, to be clear, bums me out because I loved Eternal Darkness and think this spiritual successor could be great.  I hope it eventually sees the light of day and is completely awesome when it does!

In other words don't hire a Stanley Woo or Bioware types that have no idea on how to talk to the community or have a horrible reputation to where you need to make an entire video trying to disspell rumors because people do not trust nor like you.

Moral of the story, don't hire toxic people.
