If you decide to play certain free-to-play MMO-style games on the PlayStation 4 you may not need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription. According to Sony Online Entertainment, publishers of those games can decide whether or not they will make Plus a requirement. SOE is developing two of its current properties for play on PS4 – PlanetSide 2 and DC Universe Online – and both of them do not need a Plus membership in order to play. Sony announced earlier in the week that a Plus subscription, which costs around $10 for a month, $18 for three months and $50 for a year, would be required to play multiplayer on the PS4.
The confirmation of this fact comes from Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. He tells Polygon that the PlayStation Plus subscription requirement is up to publishers for free-to-play PS4 games.
"As far as free-to-play games are concerned, it's a publisher's decision whether they put it inside or outside of the PlayStation Plus requirements," he said.
DC Universe Online creative director Jens Andersen also reiterated this fact:
"We are a free-to-play game; you do not have to pay for PlayStation Plus to play [DC Universe Online]."
He also said that PS4 players will be able to play with their PlayStation 3 friends, since both versions of the game will share servers.
PlanetSide 2 does not share servers, but the content across PS4 and PC will be the same. Tramell Ray Isaac, senior art director on PlanetSide 2 told Polygon that the PC and PS4 will feature the same content, and they plan to add mouse and keyboard support to the PS4 version. They are also considering letting players carry over their leveled-up PC characters to PS4.
