Report: Steam Beta Code Suggests Game Sharing

A thread on NeoGAF that pokes around in some code from the new Steam Beta reveals some strange strings about game sharing on the popular digital distribution platform. The code refers to a shared game library and a shared license. While the strings have been confirmed as legitimate, Valve has not publicly commented on the data fished from the new client beta. The code in question is below:

"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicense_Title" "Shared game library"
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_OwnerText" "Just so you know, your games are currently in use by %borrower%. Playing now will send %borrower% a notice that it's time to quit."
"SteamUI_JoinDialog_SharedLicenseLocked_BorrowerText" "This shared game is currently unavailable. Please try again later or buy this game for your own library."

The code seems to illustrate a system where a user can let a friend borrow a game, but not be able to use it until they "give it back. It's certainly an interesting idea, though one wonders if it would have an impact on Steam game sales.

We'll update this story when more information becomes available.
