Saints Row 4 Associate Producer Criticizes THQ's Past 'Porn Star Marketing' for Series

August 6, 2013 -

Saints Row 4 associate producer Kate Nelson tells Edge in a recent interview that she didn't like former publisher THQ's use of adult entertainment stars to promote Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third.

"I did not always love how much THQ put an emphasis on porn stars," Nelson told Edge. "In Saints Row 2 and Saints Row: The Third there was an emphasis on the penthouse girls, and Tera Patrick."

She believes the marketing department at THQ didn't understand that Saints Row 2 and Saints Row The Third were parodies of the third-person open-world action genre.

"I think it's important in marketing games to make sure that the essence of the game is what's being marketed, and I think the porn star angle didn't really fit in with what Saints Row is at heart, which is a parody. We like to poke fun," she said.

"Saying that someone who had no industry experience was in a role that is sexualized as a producer of our project, or saying the penthouse girls are our QA staff, I just... I can see the humor in that angle of promotion."

Nelson closes by pointing out that Saints Row 4 is progressive because players can create female avatars and make them look exactly how they want.

"I think our game actually does represent women in a positive way, but the press will focus on, oh hey, there are strippers, or there's a dildo bat - it's unfortunate from my perspective that that doesn't come through."

Saints Row 4 releases August 20 North America and August 23 in Europe.

THQ was a desperate company looking for anyway to boost sales.
