Developer Creative Assembly found it had a bit of money left over in the marketing budget for its new game Total War: Rome II. Rather than run a few more banner ads it decided to commission Penny Arcade TV show Extra Credits to produce a few episodes teaching Roman history.
According to Extra Credits, the developer said the show didn't have to mention Creative Assembly or its new game, "just teach some history."
"That's awesome," says Extra Credits. "And we are going to mention them and their game because I would love to see more companies do this. I want to see companies use their ad budget to not only garner sales but also do some good. So to everybody else marketing a game that has something worth discussing, there are dozens of content creators out there who can do a lot more for you than a few banner ads are going to."
Called Extra History, the first episode debuted this week and regales viewers with an overview of the Punic Wars. Watch it above or head on over to PATV.
