Insurance Won’t Cover Hello Games’ Flood Damage

Joe Danger and No Man's Sky developer Hello Games recently suffered a calamity when its offices were flooded. According to a recent series of tweets by the Guildford, UK-based studio, the damage it suffered in its offices on Christmas Eve are not covered by its insurance policy.

"BAD NEWS! Had a 'hilarious' call with insurer yesterday. Small print is if you are in a flood risk zone, you are not insured for flooding," Hello Games noted on its Twitter account.

On Christmas Eve a flood hit the area, and caused the company to lose almost everything in its office including PCs, monitors, and furniture.

Despite the major setback, the studio says that it is looking forward and not backwards.

"On a brighter note, no insurance means we can just wade in and start setting things straight," Hello Games added.

The company is currently working on No Man's Sky, a procedurally generated first-person sprawling space adventure. The company has been showing it off a lot this month at various venues including – most recently – 2013 Spike VGX.

While I feel for these guys, this is known stuff.  Just about every country runs PSA's about the need to purchase flood insurance if you live in a flood plain.

It's in your insurance policy, too.  Hate to say it, but you're the one who didn't actually read the insurance policy you paid for.

Even moreso surprised at how many people will turn it down when it is offered to them.

If your living below sea level though.. it should be obvious to get it, and LOOK for it specifically.

Even I've got flood insurance, and I live at the top of a hill well above sea level and away from water. Doesn't stop water from getting into my basement anymore than if I were at the base though, and recently almost was needed when the power went down during a nice little ice storm and the thaw out. If my father didn't have his generator I'd be replacing my water heater and furnace right now when I need both!

This same thing happened to a lot of people in 2005 with Hurricane Katrina, and even more in 2012 with Hurricane Sandy. Always check to be sure that you're covered for Flood Insurance. You'll be surprised how many don't cover it.

    Dear Hello Games,

Do a Kickstarter for No Man's Land, if you have to.  I will totally put money into it, even though I don't have a gaming PC.  Why?  Because I believe in that project, and I have a feeling that a lot of other people do, too.

    Love, David
