The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) is reporting that Disney Interactive is getting ready to lay off several hundred employees from its global workforce. The layoffs are expected to begin shortly after the company releases its latest quarterly results – which will happen tomorrow. Currently the company employs about 3,000 people across various studios.
The layoffs aren't entirely unexpected; a recent internal memo from Disney Interactive President Jimmy Pitaro to employees warned them that he planned to reorganize the group and move several members of his senior executive team.
Pitaro took control of Disney Interactive in November after his former co-president, John Pleasants, was let go. One of the companies that will take a serious hit, according to sources, is its Playdom social gaming studio, which has struggled in recent years.
We will have more on this story as it develops.
