EA to Shut Down ‘Lord of Ultima’

Electronic Arts has finally canceled its Ultima-branded social online strategy building game Lord of Ultima. The game will officially shut down in May. The news isn't all that shocking for a number of reasons; the game – which is an Ultima game mostly in name only – never really captured the number of players EA had hoped for; and the development team working on the game, EA Phenomic, shut down last summer.

EA's "other" online Ultima game, the free-to-play Ultima Forever, has fared better because it is more in tune with the spirit of the original RPG series created by Richard Garriott.

"While glory has flickered in the heart of this new world, the shadows of the old one have risen to take it back from us forever," noted Lord of Ultima community manager Ophidian in announcing the game's closure. "It is always hard when we are met with such choices and the decision to retire older games is never an easy one."

"What?  Origin?  That shitty steam clone?" *Ducks*

I will never understand why they take IP that will only appeal to fans of a certain age and genre, and make a game in another genre for other fans.  I appretiate the boldness of going after two markets at once, but the two are similar in the way free climbing and knitting are both hobbies.
